Excerpt
The day came, and it was time to say good-bye to Neka. She looked so beautiful. We buried her in this nice Louis Vuitton outfit. Neka wasn’t the type to wear dresses. I knew I wasn’t putting her into something she never wore. I put her on a pair of Louis shoes that matched her outfit. Since her body wasn’t that hard, I made sure they put a bag on her arms. Neka was looking like a diva. She had shades on with the matching hat. Her hair was curled and pushed to the side. People will remember my sister for what she was—a shining star. We made sure Neka came in on a horse and carriage. You would have thought she was James Brown or Aaliyah. A lot of people showed up showing their love and support. Even that dick detective Urine showed up, smiling like he won the lottery. I smiled right back because if he knew what I knew, he wouldn’t be smiling: he would leave. That bitch Kyra had some nerves to show up. I peeped game, I felt a setup coming up. I knew for sure no one was going to ruin my sister’s funeral. Shytek and Jason came in. Kyra was about to act the fuck up, but Von put her in her place. I had a lot of tears. I was shaking. I cried for Neka and for my unborn child. I became a cold-hearted killer, and I wasn’t about to stop until I got justice for my sister. Before the preacher had a chance to speak, I made sure I hugged and kissed my sister. I finally broke down and lost it. The reality set in that I could never hear my sister’s voice again. I could never call and talk to her when I need a friend or an ear. I could never go shopping or have lunch with her anymore. We could never go on a vacation and do us. I tried to pull my sister out the casket until Jason pulled me off her. I knew it would be the last time I would see my sister. Tears flowed and flowed. Shytek hugged and kissed her. We all knew what time it was. I knew I was going to jail, and so did the rest of them. The preacher got up and started speaking. I was so out of it. I wasn’t hearing anything the preacher was saying. All I know was he said, “God will set you free.” He asked if anyone had anything to say. I don’t know where I got the strength from, but I got up.
“Good morning, everyone, thank you for coming out today to show love for my sister. She didn’t deserve this. She was a good girl.” I couldn’t finish my sentence I broke down in tears. Why did God keep putting me in this state of mind? I had to try and be strong for my unborn child. I wrote a poem for Neka that I would like to share with everyone. It’s called “Why.”
WHY
As I stand here today looking at your beautiful face, I ask myself why
Why does my heart hurt?
Why do my tears flow?
Is it because I miss you so
Why do I feel lost?
Why do I feel weak?
Is it because you’ve been gone for a week
Why do I feel sad?
Why do I feel empty?
Is it because you’re not with me
Why is my smile a frown?
Why is my spirit down?
Is it because you won’t be around
Why does this feel like a dream?
Why did you have to leave?
Is it because you couldn’t breathe
Why did your heart stop?
Why did you die in Brookdale?
Is it because it was your time, or was it a crime
Why didn’t you fight for your life?
Why did you lose sight?
Is it because you saw the light
Why did God take your life?
Why didn’t he give you strength to live life?
Is it because he wanted your pain to end
Why didn’t he take us all?
All I could do was cry in Jason’s arms. A lot of people got up there and spoke.
“Is there anyone else who would like to speak on behalf of Shaneka Johnson?”
“Me, I have a word or two to say.” Everyone turned around, and it was my mother high as hell. “She ain’t dead, get your ass up, Neka. I’m not playing with you.”
I couldn’t believe my eyes. Taya pulled out a liquid and threw it on Neka. I had seen enough. No one could stop me. I was gonna kill that bitch in front of everyone. I jumped on Taya just in time before she lid the match. Everyone tried to break us up. But I saw clear as day the person who threw the match on my sister. Neka’s casket burned, and she burned with it. Everyone looked in amazement. That dickhead cop couldn’t wait to arrest me, Shytek, and Jason.
