It was not that the young woman couldn’t but that she did not have the strength to do it. The memories of the days in the light were too harsh and she was occasionally reminded of them when the shadows would walk. Kanys understood his need and how it would cause him to wander leaving her alone for nights that stretched out too long, but she did not feel as he did that she was the only one who could help him gain the knowledge he wished to have. The Fates did not urge her down that path. Only the gorgeous man kneeling beside her in this tiny dark house tempted her to do so.

Kanys Clay lives in the deep dim. Unfortunately, she is not willing to get out into the light, until Coel offers some friendly persuasion and pushes her to learn more.

Coel knows all too well about the seclusion in which Kanys lives. He wishes her to get out and see what she has been missing. If anything, she must see he is really a ghost.

Kanys prefers to live as a hermit, whereas Coel wishes her to see the world, if only for one night. After her mother told her about Mares, she wanted to stay secluded from everyone. Coel believes it might be best to start with baby steps. She is surprised to discover he is actually dead. He warns her not to be afraid because while on their journey to the bright electric lights, no one can see him except her. He will protect her every step of the way. Once she steps into the bright lights, things come to surface allowing her to understand better. As she ventures further, will the Mares be more of a disappointment to her or Coel? Can she unlock the reasoning as to what Coel wishes her to discover?

I have to admit The Deep Dim was a fascinating read. I found it uplifting and diverse from other stories. Christine Rains gives the readers vibrant characters, a story that flows well, and some interesting demons along the way. I love the robust sensations that Kanys, and especially Coel, bring into play in the story. There are some moments that were tender to this reader and I was saddened by them, but knew things had to happen for a reason. The way the story is composed, I think each person will probably be affected differently. It is one that I found entertaining.

The Deep Dim is a wistful and mysterious love story that whisks you away and captures your heart. Rains is a masterful writer, spinning poetic phrases that flow off the tongue, and weaving mysteries wrapped around mysteries where each page leads to more intriguing questions. Not only is this a heart tugging love story, it is a story of self discovery, a murder mystery, and a supernatural dream.



Kanys lives in fear of the light because of the spirits that it brings. She lives sequestered in a dark house, hiding from the world and sleeping during the daylight hours until a dashingly handsome ghost charms his way into her life and steals her heart. She leaves her refuge of darkness to help solve the mystery of his existence, because he is unlike the others and more real to her than anyone she’s ever met since the death of her mother. This journey leads her to places where she would never otherwise go and people that she’s destined to meet. Along the way she learns more about herself and finds the answers to dark secrets shading her past.



Rains creates vibrant and witty characters that are so real you expect them to come knocking at your door. They interact with such interesting banter that, at times, borders on vicious, shocking, and belly rumbling. Kanys is a sweet and fragile waif of a young woman juxtaposed with a swooningly poetic specter and a blunt and tumultuous punk. Together they show what true friendship is and how to love.



This is the one of the best books of 2009. I am thoroughly impressed with Rains’s masterful writing. This book called to me and wouldn’t let me put it down. I will be ordering an autographed copy for my bookshelf when it comes out in print.

Kanys Clay lives in the deep dim and only one soul can bring her to the light. The Deep Dim delves into the mysterious journey of a young woman who has an usual gift. Young Kanys can see ghosts or Mares. Coel is a different kind of ghost that visits Kanys because he believes she is the only one who can help him. Kanys is afraid to do so because helping her handsome ghost lover will mean that she has to do something she is not ready to do. She must step into the light, for the light makes the spirits clear to her.

The reader is slowly drawn into Kanys's world. Taking baby steps into the moonlight, the reader ventures forth with Kanys to the big city and go with her to solve Coel's mysteries. The Deep Dim is mysterious, romantic, and philosophical. Kanys's journey reminds me of Plato's cave analogy of knowledge as we learn more about the world with each step Kanys takes towards the light. With a cast of unforgettable characters and a writing style that is pure poetry, I would highly recommend this book.

It really is a brilliant book, and I loved it.
