The uninitiated who have never heard the hollow, forlorn clank of a prison gate as it shuts out the joyful world of free men are apt to believe that there could be no more extreme opposites than a guard and his prisoner.
But prison walls do not discriminate and wreak their devilish effect on both parties. For if the truth be known, both are incarcerated - one by the criminal justice system and the other (albeit to a lesser degree) by economic circumstances. Few, if any, become jailers in fulfillment of boyhood ambition; most are motivated by a paycheck to endure the harsh circumstances of prison life. It is a pseudo-macho, brutal life, devoid of the softening influences of the fairer sex, a life that stifles kindness, generosity, and the best parts of human nature. And in their place, it substitutes man's most primitive instincts: anger and lust. All that survives is base and perverse - art is the tattoo of a naked lady on a burly arm; literature is graffiti scrawled on a cellblock wall; and camaraderie is a shared needle. Indeed, all who enter such a vile place are lost and the inmates, more often than not, receive their paroles before the guards receive their pensions.
