Chapter 1
The limb outside the bedroom window tapped against it like the beat, beat, beat of a tom-tom. I thought of an old song. The wind had picked up just before bedtime. Rain will be assaulting the windows soon, so the weatherman says. Josh left for his Chicago trip just after lunch. We dreaded this trip. I’m always leery when he’s out of town and this time is even worse.
I had surgery six weeks ago and this morning the doctor gave me an all clear. I can drive now, thank goodness. It is terrible not to be able to go when and where you want, when you want to do it. I’m still not to lift anything over five pounds for another six weeks and must ease myself into a diet of solid food. Three months ago, I started having vague abdominal pains. I had the usual tests and procedures. They came back negative. The discomfort increased to the point I was doubled over with pain some days. Finally, I was shipped off to see a group of specialists: a gastroenterologist, a surgeon, an internist, a pain management specialist and a psychologist. They were supposed to be the best of the best.
I think most decided that it was all in my head. Luckily in the group was a physician that specialized in undiagnosed pain. Dr. Wagner was reassuring and confident we would solve the problem. He started with my history, concentrating on the past year. We had traveled to Africa for a seminar on health care with the goal to establish and train nurses for clinics. Josh’s firm would design and build the clinics. That had been six months ago.
“Liz, I need you to provide a stool specimen. My gut tells me you picked up a virus or bug while in Africa. Let’s see what the stool tells us.” It told the story. I had an organism that was multiplying and destroying my intestines. I was put on a massive dose of antibiotics and scheduled for surgery.
Chapter 2
It is now six weeks post-op. I am minus a large section of the intestine and the last specimen tested negative. Now I can get on with my life.
About 10:30pm, the phone rang. “Hi, Honey. I just got to the hotel. How are you feeling? Tomorrow I have all day
meetings. I’ll check in with you after my breakfast meeting and before dinner. Take care and don’t feel, just because you can drive now, that you can take on a day of shopping.” I laughed and said, “I promise I won’t do anything stupid. I have just finished a leisurely soak and had a glass of Southern White (my favorite white wine). Alicia is coming over in the morning for coffee. She’ll make sure I behave. Sleep tight. I love you and already miss you.” “Night-night. See you in a couple days. Love ya.”
I dropped my robe beside the bed and climbed in. Misty jumped up on the bed and meowed. Zack patiently sat beside the bed waiting for permission to join us. “Ok. Guess you’re better than nothing to cuddle.” I tossed and turned for a few minutes but finally Zack’s doggy snores and Misty’s soft purrs lulled me to sleep.
Chapter 3
Did I hear a door open and a whisper? Zack and Misty left the bed and headed for the door. Guess it was just them and they just needed to stretch. They’ll let me know if they want out. I settled further into my pillow. A sense of apprehension woke me up. I could feel someone near me. A glimpse of a dark figure at the bedside alerted me this wasn’t a dream. “Who’s there? What do you want?” As I started to sit up, I was slammed back down and a pillow was pushed toward my face. I saw a face. It couldn’t be. “Why?” I screamed as the pillow crashed into my face and was held with great force.

I'm sure most of us can relate to being in such a vulnerable state as Liz finds herself. I really like your straight forward writing style, and you build tension perfectly. I wish you much success!
