"Miracles and Wonders" is a captivating collection of five short stories involving wishful thinking and altered states of conciousness. Encounters with miraculous healing powers , futuristic visions, mind-bending mental manifestations, galactic exploration, and an amorous alien, meld together to make up this unique selection of literary gems.

Ever imagine what it would be like to heal someone; to perform a real live miracle? Or how about spending a day in a cool future cyber-world or living in a society where aggression can be cured by a tiny pill? (Ah, the wonders of modern medicine!) Can you imagine working as a Galactic Miner, bouncing around the Solar system or encountering an alien whose sultry waves are far more attractive than any simple lesson in quantum mechanics? This is a tease of the tales that lie within the pages of this fascinating read.

Excerpt

From the first story - "Miracles"

“Do you believe in miracles, doc?” the old man’s thin white hair and full beard formed a Gaussian halo around his lightly tanned and freckled face. He smiled and looked down sheepishly.
“Do you?” Dr. Bowman echoed.
“It may not be all that important what I think,” Jack said a bit sarcastically. “But I reckon it’s time I told somebody the whole story about everything that’s happened. Ya know, I figured out pretty quick that most people will stab ya in the back and leave you for dead if they can get somethin’ valuable out of you for nothin’. I know you probably don’t understand, but the truth is, I’ve gotta trust somebody and Doc, you’ve always seemed like a straight arrow to me. I hope you’re the kind of person I think you are.”
Doctor Bowman sat up straighter on his examining stool. He looked squarely at Jack, sitting across from him and said, “Please go on.”
“Well, you know me, Doc. As usual, I was out sitting up on Cemetery Ridge, just off the road so’s I could get a clear view o’ Winfield. I was with Red, you remember Red?” Jack’s voice softened and was followed by a small sigh. “Anyways, we was sittin’ up there watchin’ this big storm blow in from the southwest. It was in April for sure, around the 8th, if I remember. That was just this past spring.” He paused and scratched his stubbly chin as if trying to remember something that had happened years ago.
“Me and Red, that’s right,” he finally continued, “we was sittin’ in my ’58 Chevy pickup, there at the top of the hill where we could see the better part of Winfield. A storm was comin’ in from the southwest, as I said, and I could tell it was going to be a hummer. I figure major wind, rain, and o’ course there was always the chance of a tornado, heaven forbid!”
Dr. Bowman listened intently, as Jack began to relate his recollection of the events. The good doctor resigned himself to patiently allow the old man’s story to unfold.

Reviews for "Miracles and Wonders"

Reviewed by Ronald Hull 8/17/2019
Congratulations on this book. Looks like my kind of short story, although your excerpt is very brief, like your description. Lately has become a little alien to the word "alien," already used in the classic movie. Some other words, like extraterrestrial or even a fictional name, might be less threatening. Intelligent is kind and good. Alien is primitive intelligence like dinosaurs.
