Lucky for them, nine-year-old Molly Jane Fisher comes to the rescue. Not only does she love guinea pigs, she is also a detective and will not close the case until everything is sorted out.

CHAPTER 1
Guinea Pigs, Grandmas and Videocameras
My name is Molly Jane Fisher, and I have a story to tell you. It is an amazing story about two guinea pigs and a mystery; a mystery I helped to solve.
Here is some information about me:
1. I love guinea pigs.
2. My dad is allergic to everything, so I have no guinea pigs of my own.
3. I adopt grandmas (I have 12).
4. I love parakeets.
5. I do have a parakeet of my own. His name is Tweets.
6. I love all animals. If I could, I would have one of each animal living in my house. Daddy says I had better plan on working in a zoo. Or living in a zoo, that would work too.
7. I love to solve mysteries.
Now, back to the guinea pigs and their amazing mystery story. That is why you picked up this book, I am sure, because of the Guinea Pigs, not me. (Don’t worry, that does not hurt my feelings at all. I understand because I love guinea pigs (see #1 on the list). If I think of more things that are important for you to know about me, I will let you know, I promise.)
The amazing stuff started on a Thursday in July.
Before the amazing stuff started, on that Thursday in July, my life was going on in an ordinary kind of way. I was done with school for the year (third grade). Daddy was still allergic to guinea pigs. Tweets was getting me trouble all the time because of landing on peoples’ heads. (Nobody seems to like that.) Our garage-apartment renter, Amelia Dearling, was still not being nice and still not letting me meet her two guinea pigs.
The only good guinea pig part of my whole life back then was that my best friend Nora had a guinea pig named Peanut that I got to see almost every day. (They live across the street from me.) Nora said we could “share” Peanut, but the fact of that matter is that Peanut lives in Nora’s house, not mine. So, it’s not very even of a share.
Remember when I told you about my grandmas? I love my grandmas. Since school was finally out, I was able to have longer visits at Shady Acres where most of them live. In the summer, Mom and I go every Friday after lunch. My grandmas love it when I talk a lot, and LOUD, too. It is a perfect situation. I get an audience for talking about my mysteries and all kinds of other great ideas that I have with nobody asking me to be quiet or just stop talking, and they get the fun and interesting company of--me! Can you think of anything more perfect?
It would only be more perfect if there were pet guinea pigs all around the rec room where we meet so we could each have one in our laps while we eat cookies and talk. I think next week I will talk to the management about that idea.
My grandma who is an actual related relative and lives at Shady Acres is Nanna, who is almost one hundred years old. She is the coolest. The other grandmas are adopted.
Last week I was lucky enough to adopt a new grandma, Helen. Grandma Helen has a meany-faced daughter named Barbara who asked me if I would write letters to her mom. Of course I said I would, I love to write letters to my grandmas!
I did not know until much later that the very letter I wrote to Grandma Helen was a humongous enormous part of the mystery of Amelia Dearling and her guinea pigs.
Who could have ever guessed that? I sure didn’t. But it was.
Hang on, you will know soon enough what I am talking about.
So, anyway, back to Thursday...
