Contrary to what many may think, Derrick embodies a normal adolescent. However, he has an awareness of this stage of his life, that will happen once, and which he means to turn to his advantage. He no longer has the status of a child. Yet, he rather serves as a bridge between childhood and adulthood. On the one hand, he still has rights such as a place to live, to eat, to sleep free of charge. His parents go to work to ensure these rights, until age eighteen. On the other hand, he has some obligation and responsibility. He must show respect for his providers and expand such respect to anyone who reminds him of them, such as an older person, his teachers, and the law enforcers. He is accountable to his parents for his actions; therefore, to avoid their blame and punishment, he must behave according to rules and regulations the family has agreed upon, and to common sense. He knows that he will please his providers by going to school, showing good grades on his report cards, doing his homework. He has an awareness of his drives, his hormones, and his brain that keep enticing him to act. But how will he act? Does he have enough maturity to know exactly what to do? Later on, he would learn that a scientific school of thought maintain that human maturity usually starts at the age of twenty-five. At the age of twenty-one. In the meantime, can he allow himself to act foolishly? On the other hand, he think quite firmly that those youth activities he immediately has in mind, although innocent, harmless, and natural for adolescents and young adults, also stand for open doors to uncontrollable instinctive actions; otherwise, his neighborhood would not experience such rotten state of affairs. Violence, illegal drugs, prostitution, loud music, teenage pregnancy and all their disastrous consequences plagued it. He starts asking question. What’s the rationale behind smoking? Inhaling smoke and puffing it out doesn’t strike my imagination. Drinking alcohol and becoming intoxicated could not have any justification to him. Taking drug and turning stupid describe the remotest type of action to take delight in. As far as he is concerned, going against these fashionable but deleterious suggestions, becoming aware of reality and being a dynamic element in its unfolding, all this stood for a wonderful way of life and a recipe for self-discipline. I would say that Derrick is an adolescent with a plan and a vision. He intends to take his actual status as a stepping stone to a responsible adulthood. This vision, he will pass it on his peers via a club aiming at expressing their feelings, their frustration and their hopes. The will face reality, instead of running away from it, by getting involved in all kinds of irresponsible and senseless activities. They will share their skills and the best of ourselves.
