Scientists are reported to be working feverishly to validate or discredit recent findings of the highly controversial New York Association for Physical and Geophysical Studies. According to the association’s investigators, there appears to be a highly charged electromagnetic field force pulsing through the lower East River in the approximate vicinity of Brooklyn Bridge. Association members posit that although these magnetic patterns appear to be intermittent and somewhat irregular, the may have prevailed for thousands of years, perhaps since the last ice age, in which glaciers moved as far as the bridge’s present locale, but, inexplicably, not beyond it.

The early construction and operation of engineer John Roebling’s Brooklyn Bridge was dogged by deaths and disasters, some of them, like the caisson fire of 1870 and the Brooklyn Bridget Riot of 1883, disturbingly bizarre. Indeed, insiders worried that the bridge would never be built, despite the persistent efforts of New York’s financial community to keep the project afloat. On the advice of Spiritualists who numbered Roebling among them, (believers in "electrical" life forces, reincarnation, good and bad karma and the goal of all worldly striving, Nirvana.) the bridge’s construction workers were induced to take part in an eerie lottery. The losers (who through their sacrifice would now seem to be "more likely to succeed" in their next incarnation) were then entombed alive in the bridge’s underwater construction caissons, in order to appease whatever "demons" were bedevilling the enterprise.
