“Good morning class!” chirped Mrs. Cherry Bottleneck
entering the classroom. “Unpack your book bags and
remember we have a special surprise today!”
“Fiddle-de-dum! I told ‘ya!” chimed Isabella.
“Hey! You Amiga!” Stormy insisted cocking his head
and twisting his torso in snakelike motions as he trailed
her around the room. “Princess, you ‘gonna answer my
question? How many socks do you have?!”
“No, leave her alone,” begged Addison Paige sheepishly,
afraid to get in anymore trouble. Addison at one point was
her best friend, today, Anastacia wasn’t quite sure.
“Hey, she doesn’t have to answer you, you know,” she
whispered back.
“A zillion maybe,” Anastacia bravely defended ignoring
Addison’s sudden decoy.
“A zillion?” overheard Caden Hall bending his neck and
reaching for his eraser. “Well, my favorite subject is lunch
time!”
“Your favorite subject is what?” Marissa Krews puzzled.
“Lunchtime is not a subject Caden Hall. Stay focused.”
“Well, it is for me!” he darted vehemently.
“Agh! That’s why you look like you do Caden. Speak to the
hand . . . better yet . . . whatever! I don’t know why I even
bother with you sometimes.” She sighed, swinging her
wrist while re-directing full attention to her book. “Caden
you, you are just a boy, a boy in my class, who just happens
to be sitting next to me, and that’s all, okay Caden Hall?
Don’t play with me on the playground today!”
“Now, that’s cool,” he continued ignoring Marissa’s remark,
I love those socks on you Ana!”
“That makes two of us.” Anastacia answered shifting her
pencil across her drawing.
“No, three,” chimed in Isabella Shaft.
“Thanks Caden, thanks Isabella.” She replied flatly and
doodled in silence.
I bought The Girl With A Thousand Socks for my granddaughter. Of course I had to read it before mailing it out. This story is… well, adorable is what comes to mind. It’s told in an off-beat, magical sort of way, a delightful little story. Love the author's voice and can't wait to read more of her writings.
