Winter's End
The human heart is a stage on which all the events which will transpire in human history are performed, and Love is the key player most conspicuous in its absence or its presence. These words rested on the computer screen, words of black typed into gray, the product of human musings, left incomplete.
The afternoon sun was brilliant as it flooded through the window onto the thick oak table top, blurring the menagerie of computer hardware into an image of geometric patterns snaked together by countless cables and wires. The view from the chair, just within the light's reach, was an inviting scene full of contrasts, and the images drew one's mind through the window and out into the yard where it could ponder on the absurdities. All about the ground were piles of snow separated by meandering lakes of icy water that shimmered in the radiance of the sun.
On this side of the glass sat a form, part of his face drenched in sunlight. Slowly, the face turned fully into the light, and a smile grew as the corners of his mouth turned slightly upward. The face remained still and calm, with the faded smile resting there for a breathless minute, until he turned away again.
The movements of a blinking eye and the spreading of furrowed lines upon his face, combined with the tilting of his head toward the blip that flashed impatiently from the screen. His fingers moved into motion, and more words appeared upon the gray surface.
If by Choice, or Fate, or Providence, each heart alone discerns, Love should fail to rule that stage, then Pain will have the center stage, and man shall lose the appetite to wake each day to what life offers.
The man's hands paused again, and as he spun his chair away from the window he tilted his head upward. Out of reach of the searchlight of the sun, one could see the emotions roll across its surface. They were a mixture, these musings that plied his countenance: the squinting of his eyes, the furrowed brow, and the faint smile, that quell as he might, would slip again to his lips, until it settled there. His eyes filled with moisture, but the smile remained, as his eyes sparkled with the thoughts that danced inside his head. His breathing was deep and slow, and the chair rocked ever so slightly in its swivel as the thoughts poured out, and then, as he paused in breath, a chuckle fumbled out between his smiling lips. Then his eyes slowly closed and his shoulders sagged as he melted into his daydream.
