A ticking clock. A man in a chair. His eyes are closed, but he’s not asleep. Never asleep. He is sitting straight-backed in the stillness, absorbed in a motionless waltz with insomnia, awaiting the moment when all his preparations will lead to an inescapable apogee. But in this moment, in this room, as in so many other rooms and cities before it, he is biding his time in the gathering hush before dawn, allowing only the faint buzz of his alarm to finally break its spell. Jarret stirs, slowly opening his eyes to the darkness as if awakening to all he knows to be true. He checks his watch and rises, dressed in a craftsman’s plain coveralls. Last, he lifts up his trench coat, checking the heft in one of its pockets, then slides the water glass into the other pocket, and slips out of the room like a ghost. The Mark A gray, wet Paris morning awaits him as he steps from his rundown hotel and heads on his way. He passes rows of sidewalk cafes just opening for the day, their owners glancing skyward, concerned by the dark, gathering clouds. He moves on, unnoticed, locating a public trash bin into which he discreetly discards the water glass and surgical gloves, then turns down a wide avenue to make his way through the chilly morning to an ornate hotel, rising like a twelve-story throne above a lush park. Bypassing its gilded entrance, he continues down a side-street, angling around to the hotel’s backside, where an unmarked door admits the staff. Checking to see if he’s been followed, he moves to blend in with the other workers arriving for their daily shift, entering a backstage, cigarette-clouded world of waiters stealing mid-service smokes, and housekeepers adjusting their maid costumes, designed with lacy, school-girl details to reassure the wealthy clientele of their infinitely superior status. Jarret moves on through a large, bustling kitchen, turning out immaculately plated soufflés and croissants, and continues on to a small, dank change room smelling of cloying after-shaves and sweat. SHaDOW GAME
Shadow Game is a riveting and action packed short story about Jarrett, a professional assassin who
never misses his mark. He’s seen so many hotel rooms in so many cities; he’s in Paris or Berlin one day
and back home to Los Angeles the next. It’s the only life he knows. At fifty-something, Jarrett would like
to retire except there’s one last hit he’s agreed to do for Helen, a friend in the business. Written in third
person narrative with plenty of first person dialogue this tantalizing novella, written by author Darryl
Sollerh is intended for mature audiences.

In a strange twist of fate, Jarrett gets a bump on the head and starts to see colors around people. He’s
seeing their auric field but thinks he’s got a concussion. This could be a problem for a man who counts
on precision when he aims his gun. It concerns him, yet he prepares diligently for his last mission.
Helen informs him there will be a delay. Jarrett doesn’t like delays and unplanned days, but there’s
nothing he can do about the change of schedule. He’s in Indonesia so he heads out into the old
Byzantine streets and the bustling marketplace. He sees many faces and colors around them. He
attends a puppet show and becomes mesmerized by a young woman. He’s drawn to her like nothing in


his life before. Lia and her father called, The Delang, befriend him and take him to a Buddhist temple
where they try to explain that he has healing powers, as indicated by the colors he sees, that are far
more remarkable than his abilities with a sniper’s riffle.

Caught in the cross-fires of some very dirty politics, Jarrett realizes, in a couple of days, he will kill,
Bahru, the political figure that may be the only hope for Lia and the people of her country. They need
Bahru to take office so they can escape the propaganda and the evil of current ruler, General Matak.
Jarrett never gets involved in the politics surrounding his work. He just does his job and moves on.
Conversely, he wants to protect Lia and her father, but soon realizes he’s being followed himself.
Whatever he must do, he still wants to save Lia; she represents all that is good and wonderful in his life.
Jarrett will pay a heavy price for his choices, but he’s ready for whatever that may be.

In his story, Shadow Game, author Darryl Sollerh has created a dramatic fiction about violence, betrayal
and life lived as a shadow. We see a killer who has a soft spot where the light has entered. This light
allows a trained assassin to leave a legacy of good as his karmic wheel must have turned for him. In my
opinion, it takes some brilliance in writing for an author to bring together these two worlds: so vastly
different, Jarrett’s and Lia’s and make them work in a way that offers up a Buddhist lesson on the soul of
a man. This author does it well. If you like your fiction, fast and furious, filled with mystery and
adventure this novella will be a good read for you. You don’t want to put it down!

SHaDOW GAME
Shadow Game by Darryl Sollerh is not your typical assassin type of book. This is a work of dramatic fiction that appeals to just about everyone. There is violence, betrayal and secrets. The book has layers, like that of a cake. The foundation being, Jarrett’s life as a cold-blooded expert assassin. He has always been in control, and plans each detail to ensure success. It starts with Jarrett, an experienced assassin, who has to complete one last ‘hit’ in Indonesia, in order to be set free of his duties. The second layer is complex, the accident, which allows a light to enters Jarrett’s world, which creates a dilemma. For now, he has to contend with this soft spot that is now developing. He must make a choice to leave a legacy, of evil or good. This twist of fate occurs when Jarrett bumps his head, and, later realizes that he now has the power to heal with his hands. He makes a deep connection with Lia, and becomes friends with her. and her father, Delang. The third layer, is the icing on the cake. The finished product and what it will look, feel, and taste like. The writer has built a battle between good and evil, that surrounds Jarrett. As the battle continues, he must choose to accept the role as a giver of life, more than a maker of death. This novella has accomplished an amazing plot, climax, and ending. Everything about this book, except for a few minor spelling errors was mesmerizing. It takes talent to weave together a story with such magnitude. A short but very powerful story of redemption and rebirth, utilizing Buddhism and a deep look at Indonesian life makes the story feel real and allows the reader to relate.

It reminds me of a good roller coaster. Not too long, with enough twists and turns to leave you breathless and an ending that makes you proclaim "Wow! What a ride!" Sollerh delves into an area where few actions writers seem to travel and makes it out alive.
