Each day, we should spend time in contemplation of the way the Earth works with the elements of fire, earth, wind and water to create the physical reality in which we come to know ourselves. Through these adventures we learn how to create and manifest memories (and possibly more) in the way the Earth manifests flowers and animals.
On these sacred islands, as well as many other places around the world, one finds evidence of sacred sites that are often times associated with religion and mythology. These sites tend to be marked in one form or another, most typically with stone, because stone was easily accessible during the time when the site was declared.
Here in Hawai’i, sacred sites are typically marked by what’s called a heiau (pronounced hay – yow), or an Ahu, which are both ancient stone structures resembling a cross between the Scottish “cairn” and the Central or South American step pyramid. These represent a special place in the landscape where one can “capture a current of earth energy.” Sacred places in Hawai’i are often related to death, war and other aspects of the state's history.
