Love to see this as a movie.
I would love to see this book become a movie! It takes you on a journey ranging in setting from a poor, small, rundown home that is not much more than a shack, to the life of luxury in the sky scrapers of a big city, the beautiful open plains of a large ranch, and even as far as Hong Kong, and not to mention the roller coaster of emotions that comes with it! As a movie, the cinematography opportunities for this would be incredible. With the excellent story line to boot, it would be a must see, no doubt

Author has knack for humor particular to the South
Leta has the knack for the humor particular to the South like so many southern women writers; authors like Rita Mae Brown, Eudora Welty, and my all time favorite, Ellen Gilchrist—come to mind. I delighted in how she described “Cazzie’s heart kicked into overdrive and sputtered like a motor with a flooded carburetor.”

hrough the strong and persistent characters, Cazzie and Nine, the author makes a portrayal of women growing up after the depression quite well: a time when women liberation, equality and the middle class were on the rise, as well as violence and abuse.
I can tell this is a work of fiction, but probably has much personal history and memoir in it too. The common thread, the tension of what happened to Cazzie’s parents, meanders all through the book but never returns to the question she asks at the beginning of the book until the very end, when the reader is rewarded at the with the answers, at full gallop, which made me want to skip to the ending.


Powerful characters draw you in
Leta McCurry creates real, powerful, three dimensional characters. From the minor ones like Hink Bolton to the major players including Bama Tapp and the incomparable Nine, McCurry knows how to draw you in and have you holding your breath throughout the entire book. Her characters leap off the page and the emotions she generates stay with you long after the final page.
