CHAPTER 1
“Katrina, I need help.”
Katerina stumbled out of bed, her cell phone slipping from her hand.
“Damn it,” she muttered.
Fumbling for the lamp, she snapped it on, blinking several times against the harsh light. She heard the low tone of the man’s voice, now coming from under the bed. Even from a distance he sounded frightened and hysterical.
“Katrina? Katrina?”
Bending over the side of the bed, her long chestnut hair cascading onto the floor, she groped for her phone. She grabbed it, bringing it to her ear.
“This is Katerina. Who is this?”
“Katr—, it’s Joe Lessing. I’m a friend of Phil’s. You remember me, right?”
Kat worked to match the voice to a face. After a moment, the film of sleep dropped away. Medium height. Built like a boxer. Strong jaw. Black hair with a widow’s peak.
“Yes, Mr. Lessing. How can I help you?”
She listened to Joe Lessing's labored breathing at the other end of the phone; he sounded like he had just come in from a brisk jog. The clock radio read twelve-thirty. It was a little late for a run around the reservoir.
“I can’t find Phil. Do you know where he is?”
“No, I’m sorry, I don’t.”
“He’s not answering his cell phone.”
“Mr. Lessing, I don’t work for Mr. Castle anymore. Maybe his current assistant can help you—"
“Shit! Shit!” Lessing's voice rose. "SHIT!"
“Mr. Lessing—"
“Listen, Katri—Katerina—I need some help. Be a good girl and come over here and I’ll make it worth your while. Okay?”
Katerina answered with silence. She had met Joe Lessing maybe three times when she worked for Philip. He never struck her as a crazed, rapist murderer...until now. Not a good idea, she thought. Whatever this is, I don't need it.
“Look, this is on the level. I’m in some shit here and I need a little help. It’s worth a thousand dollars.”
That I do need. Desperately.
“Okay...twenty minutes.”
“Make it ten. It’s a matter of life or death.”
“Which is it?”
“I’m not sure.” He gave his address and hung up.

She finds herself struggling for money and soon has a problem: she needs $14,000 in two weeks or she'll lose her apartment and education.
Then she stumbles upon a job she can't turn down. And so Katerina becomes a 'fixer' for the wealthy men of New York. She simply has to 'fix' their problems quick, no questions asked and no trail left. With plenty of skills acquired from her past shady boss, Katerina finds the job a breeze... to begin with. But when the jobs start to become more difficult and become a risk, Katerina finds herself torn between her own ethics and her need for money...
" 'There are rules," Jasmine continued, in an even, soft monotone. 'You must follow the rules. If you don't, there will be no reason for you to be here.' "
The novella starts with a bang as we are immediately thrown into the action with Katerina. It's fast-paced and exciting with each and every turn in the story, and as we follow Katerina on her journeys, we begin to unravel who she is and how she thinks, revealing a wonderfully relatable character. She's young, she's smart and, most importantly, she has a conscience, and I found myself really rooting for her throughout the book.
"Ethics is whatever you want it to be, as long as you can explain it so that you can sleep nights."
Whilst secondary characters in the book are not as fleshed out and developed, each one is still incredibly interesting to witness, from the wealthy men looking for a 'fix', to the anxious, OCD burglar, Mr Winter.
I can honestly say that I was not bored at any single point in the book whatsoever. I was eager to find out how Katerina would work her way around her dificult duties, and enjoyed being introduced to mysterious characters along her journey.
The fun and fast-paced story finished with a cliffhanger that definitely left me wanting more. I can't wait to get my hands on the next installment and follow Katerina in what hopefully will be a string of even bigger and riskier jobs.

'The Fixer' exposes what money can buy, which is practically - everything. Katrina accepts the job and agrees to all the rules and stipulations and becomes a paid fixer!
The story has so many twists and turns that adds an excellent set of sub-plots. The additional story line concerning Katrina's parents was an unexpected mystery on it's own. 'The Fixer' is definitely a page turner. Keeps the reader on the edge of their seats throughout.
I can't say enough about 'The Fixer.' I loved this book...Extremely entertaining!
Jill Amy Rosenblatt has a great writing style that simply flows. I couldn't put the book down. It is a well-written mystery-like novel. A definite thumbs up. Check this one out. You won't be disappointed!
