Having never married has given me strength. You see, I already know how to be alone. I will never be afraid of living without a man. I won't be fearful my husband will leave me for another woman. In addition, I won't be like my mother, mourning a lifetime companion. I will never ask, "What am I going to do now that my husband is gone?" I have learned to stand by myself. (page 137)

I heartily recommend "Spicy Spinsters" to anyone who has reached a certain age in a busy, productive life, only to find herself questioning past choices because they have not led to true love. The stories in this book illustrate this dilemma in a variety of ways, with a diverse cast of characters. My favorite stories in the collection are the ones that provide a stark contrast between sisters orr other close relatives who have made opposite life choices. For example, "Corpulent Sass" and "When the Twilight Is Gone" both describe the progress of an envious sibling in learning to appreciate her own life, while recognizing the cracks in her sister's happy facade. Each story, whatever its subject matter, has humor, an uplifting resolution, and in some cases a surprise ending. Well done.
