Chapter 2 ~ Why Vanilla Bean Paste?
I used to sell a soap that had vanilla beans added as I took the time to scrape out the beans to get to the vanilla caviar. It was a little messy, but I loved the aroma. This was before I’d ever heard about something called vanilla bean paste, as I didn’t bake back then.
However, when I began baking French macarons, I learned about vanilla bean paste. I read many online reviews from bakers of all levels of expertise citing it was very flavorful. It is definitely flavorful but it’s not really a paste, it’s more like molasses or maple syrup. Yet the seeds are evident and that’s what I like about it—no scraping of vanilla beans. Here are the ingredients: sugar, water, vanilla extract, vanilla beans, gum tragacanth [a natural thickener].
Sugar actually increases the soap’s lather and the rest of the additives won’t change the soap.
I recommend also using a vanilla fragrance because the aroma doesn’t have enough of a vanilla kick. However, vanilla bean paste would be okay for someone who prefers an unscented soap.
