Excerpt
“Where are they?” Aloma thought as she twisted her damp fingers.
She noticed how warm and quiet the house seemed as she walked down the hall. Through the open door she could see her parents having a conversation. She wondered what it was about.
Their voices got louder as Aloma got closer to the door. She hesitated for a moment not sure whether to go inside. She knocked twice and went in.
“I came to say goodnight,” Aloma said as she plopped down on the bed.
“Make sure you get a good nights’ sleep because we have a long day ahead of us tomorrow,” said Dad.
He was six feet tall and medium build with broad shoulders. A rather large Adam’s apple stuck out of his neck. Aloma watched it move up and down with every word that came out of his mouth. She scanned the room and noticed two boxes scattered on the floor.
"Mama, can I carry my red suitcase on the plane?”
The suitcase was a birthday gift from her godmother Mamie. It was her absolute favorite and she carried it whenever she went to Fatima’s house for a sleep over. It was covered with butterfly stickers she bought with her allowance.
“Sure you can, as long as you take good care of it.”
