This is a young adult fantasy fiction that takes place in the not too distance future in a parallel world there are two lands where women rule. In one land called Reverent live the pious Outsiders, with strict rules and regulations where Chocolate is taboo.
Separated by scrublands deep in the Forest of Mantilla, hides a secret City, called Carmel. A place where Chocolate is plentiful. For 150 years inside this city live the Dregs. Their loyalty is to their Queen and protecting the Gift.
Chapter I
The Land of Reverent
In the Command Center, Ambassador Hearah was watching intently from her daughter’s bedroom window. Her Clondike soldiers were riding into the valley of Sentinel where the cocoa fields flourish. It was the day that the Chocolate Decree amendment was signed. She wasted no time in having her dedicated Clondikes seize and destroy all the cocoa. Showing no emotion as the cocoa fields burned, the Ambassador came to another decision.
“Kayleigh,(K-lee) when you are of age, you will be Joined with the Commander’s son Leo. He is a dedicated Clondike and his son will make a fine Companion.”
Kayleigh was just twelve years old then, and playing with her large dollhouse. She went over to the window to see what her mother was watching.
“Mother, why are the cocoa fields burning?”
Ambassador Hearah still showed no emotion. “Cocoa is no more Kayleigh.”
“But Mother, I like cocoa! I like the chocolate candy it makes!”
Her mother closed her eyes for a moment, turned around, and faced her. She gave her only daughter a cold stare. “Kayleigh, listen to me very carefully. Cocoa has been judged unacceptable and as part of our new law, you are to no longer speak of it, ever. Is that understood?”
She looked at her mother and remembered how easy it was to just agree. “Yes mother, I understand. I shall no longer speak of it.” Kayleigh always added in her mind to sentences she spoke, and this time it was, “in front of you.”
I hope that anyone who reads my novel will enjoy it. It is my first published works and I would love to see it do well. There is a list of characters and events from A-Z in the back of the book that will come in handy in the first two chapters. I have also put in a Conversion Chart in the back of Dreg Symbolism which is the secret writings of the Dregs. One of the maps in the begining is in this writing and you can use the chart to read the map with.
