The pearl-white BMW with dark-tinted
windows traveled slowly around the parking lot. The lone male driver stopped as a well-dressed
couple came out of the restaurant, carrying a white
Styrofoam box. The man leaned over and kissed the
woman, then opened her car door.
Turning the BMW, the driver went through the
parking lot again and looked at his watch. In his
head, he replayed their conversation from the day
before, when he had nonchalantly asked her what
hours she worked. He clearly remembered her
saying that she started work at 6:00 a.m. and got off
at 3:00 p.m. It was now already 3:30. What was
taking her so long? He gripped the steering wheel
harder as he wondered whether she ever had to
cover someone else’s shift.
The door to the restaurant opened and she
walked out. He quickly pulled into a parking slot
and waited. Tapping on the steering wheel, he
nervously watched as her Chevy Blazer backed out
of her parking spot. Once the backup lights were
off, he threw the BMW into reverse. Staying a safe
distance from her car, he followed her, turn by turn.
They became separated at the traffic light at Orange
Grove and Kings Road.
