The protagonist is Helen. Beautiful. Dominating. Free. Uninhibited. Her brief, daring and, in some ways, fascinating existence is rich in events which take her from the orphanage to becoming "Lady S", the splendid dominatrix of the House of the Governess, through the most diverse and peculiar life experiences: college student, lap dancer, top model and finally "Lady S", the talented profiteer of weakness and human perversions.
The three narrative levels - the narrator, Helen and the detective - and the enigmatic finale make the story somewhat singular.
I spent several years in the bar dancing almost every days, for hours.
That continuous exercise had slimmed my body even more, making it firmer and proportioned.
With the exception of Jane, the other dancers changed continuously so I didn’t have possibility of making any true friendships with them. My only friend, in that period, was Jane. She was always kind and willing with me, liberal with advice and she admired me sincerely. She was fond of me as a sister, she told me. Between us there was never any ambiguous relationship of a more or less illicit nature. Ours was a real friendship.
With regards to men, I saw them in their hundreds, rather, in their thousands. Most of them were anonymous faces that stared at me, undressed me with their looks, and desired me sexually. They limited themselves to touching my legs when they could and when I wanted and they thanked me by throwing me a lot of money.
I was the dancer who earned the most. Everyone wanted to admire “the princess with the green eyes”, and so my little stage was the most coveted and the most besieged.
Important people wanted to meet me, invited me to dinner and I, based on the liking that they inspired in me, accepted or not their invitations.
Usually I limited myself to going to dinner with them and, only rarely, did I take them to bed. ................................................................................................................
