A perfect title for an intriguing book that takes us back in time to a different generation. A generation where hitchhiking across country or anywhere was quite the norm. I'm old enough to remember how frequently my mother would stop to pick up hitchhikers as we traveled. It was not unusual and it was, then, considered safe, unlike today unfortunately. 'Long Highway Dancing' is a memoir of the author's travels and the interesting people he met and friends he made. Jude Aher provides the reader with the insight into this "world." His lyrics/poetry mixed throughout the book is deep, thoughtful and thought-provoking, such as the line..."it's the warmth of your dreams that gives to the air its oxygen." This book is full of nuggets to be discovered and does not let the reader down. There is ample discussion about earth, sun and nature but also includes by stark contrast, war, and how they each relate to mankind while providing us with insight into mankind itself. The final chapter is a wonderful collection of poems; my favorite (if I had to pick) is titled 'Remember.' It is a sincere poem about the war and how the author feels. I loved the ending chapter and the book is worth checking out, if only for the poetry. If you are looking for a deep, self-reflecting book for an easy, "one-setting" read, 'Long Highway Dancing' is worth the while. A definite thumbs-up! I look forward to reading additional works by Jude Aher.
