A step by step guide to self-publishing for the frustrated author.
A few years ago, I completed my novel, Flight From Eden, and decided to self-publish. Six months later, I had no hair left, prominent drool stains on my chin, nicotine stains between my toes, and an absolutely horrid itch in that awful spot between the shoulder blades that no writer can ever reach.
After reflecting several years on this experience, I decided that I just had to do something about my Karma, as I had evidently done a very serious job of annoying the cosmic gods of literature.
Literature? Science fiction? I am kidding, right?
All kidding aside, if you are a writer, and if you have made that frightening decision to self-publish, I can guarantee that you already know what I am talking about.
Here is my expiation for my unknown sins. This is a simple, step-by-step guide to self-publishing – drawn from my own experience – that may help you retain your sanity while going it alone in the publishing world.
I hope it saves you from a few of the costly mistakes that I made while helping you keep that dreaded itch at bay.

R. R. Bowker, L.L.C., is the publisher of Books in Print. Bowker is also the agent for ISBN numbers in the United States. This is where you begin to realize that you are now playing with the big boys.
Unfortunately, you cannot apply for less than a block of ten ISBN numbers. The prefix identifies you as the publisher, so you will probably want to use a business name for this purpose. On the plus side, either this will cover your next several books, or you can actually provide publishing services for other authors.
