Relationship Recovery
No man is an island. What is life without relationships? It is often the case that relationships cause us the most pain. Relationship Recovery helps one overcome relationship problems, by using the 12 step principles, slogans, and affirmations. It is both a reference book and an interactive workbook. The book is based on the belief that relationships are alive and, like everything that lives require nourishment. Inside the book the reader will find nourishing words of wisdom, wit, and humor from both the wise and the famous and also from everyday people. In addition, the book offers the reader places to write down their own wants, needs, and desires for a relationship. May the words in this book help you to heal, one relationship at a time. It is suggested that you begin with your relationship with the God of your understanding, the relationship with yourself, then your relationship with others. An essential part of all 12-step programs is the recovery of one’s relationships. The importance of this was simply yet clearly stated in A.A.’s book, 12 Steps and 12 Traditions:“Since defective relations with other human beings have nearly always been the immediate cause of our woes, including alcohol, no field of investigation could yield more satisfying and valuable rewards than this one.” -page 80.Step 8 made a list of all people we had harmed and became ready to make amends to them all.

RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS
1) Fifty percent of the problems in a relationship are due to lack of communications and the other fifty percent are due to good communications.
2) A relationship is like the weather. What you get depends on where you are, and at what time of the year or month.
3) A life is made one relationship at a time.
4) People are hurt by what one does not say as much as by what one says.
5) The Golden Rule of relationships—Love others as you love yourself. Give love to others as you would have them give love unto you.
6) The Platinum Rule of relationships—Give love to others as they would have you give love unto them.
7) When we grow up with animals we learn to forgive, accept, go for a walk with them, give them treats, feed them, play with them, and take care of them, and yet when we get into relationships we often do not give the same consideration.
8) Relationship bankruptcy—when your accumulated enemies exceed your accumulated friends.
9) The Platinum Rule as it relates to relationships—relate to others as you would have them relate to you.

I am a big believer in the 12 steps and author Palmieri has taken the 12 steps and applied it to one of the toughest things to do well - relationships.
As human beings, I believe that we tend to work too hard on relationships with other people, but forget to work on the most important relationship of all - our relationship with ourselves. This is the first premise of this book - work on having a happy, stronger relationship with yourself. The second most important relationship is with God. Although I am not a huge fan of "God" preaching books, this book actually does a good job of outlining the importance of a God relationship without pushing it in your face.
Once we have started working on these two relationships, we are ready to start working on the rest.
I liked the format of this book - quick bullet point references (steps) on one side and on the other there is enough room to jot down thoughts and answer some of the questions that are being asked.
I liked this book and suggest it for anyone struggling with themselves and or others right now.
A great resource

I got this book from a friend and when I first looked at the cover, I wondered what they were thinking!
Once I opened the book, however, I got it! Like they say, "never judge a book by its cover"!
This is a great work-book to help get through relationship problems. It is based on a 12-step program model and I think it could be used either along with an addiction recovery program (since it covers several of the steps that will help with that such as getting right with God, forgiveness and repairing relationships)or as a 12-steps to relationship healing on its own.
I have only just begun to reflect on the assignments, but I have skimmed through the book and am impressed with the quality of the questions and information.
I believe this book can be a valuable asset in helping a couple work together to resolve relationship issues, or for anyone who wants to improve their relationship with others.
My only complaint is that the cover should show 2 people in a happy relationship rather than one guy dressed in black...but it's what's on the inside that counts!!!
Great For anyone who deals with others

Relationships are so complex and are hard to fix when they are failing. It gets overwhelming. This book simplifies the complex issues that will help form strong relationships. The author offers thought provoking lists, inspirational poems, and quotes that both make you laugh and make you think. It is based on the 12 step recovery program but has many additions too.
The author includes plenty of space to write your thoughts, concerns and answers to the questions he asks. I know I love to scribble notes with books like these and the space to do so is much appreciated. This book is great for couples to do together or for anyone who is dealing with a tough relationship.
I really enjoyed reading through this book and will refer back to it again and again. I will also be passing it on to my sister who is dealing with marriage issues. Everyone is involved in relationships and therefore could benefit from reading this book. Don't be turned away by the cover, the book cover is very misleading. The book isn't dark or negative but instead, very uplifting.

Reviews for "life without relationship is no life at all --Relationship Recovery"
Relationship Recovery by Carl “Tuchy” Palmieri is an unconventional approach to repairing the damage that comes with broken relationships. The book is comprised of lists of the author’s personal revelations, affirmations derived from the 12 step recovery program, as well as a variety of quotes. The piece is to be used as a workbook and encourages readers to think deeply about their relationship problems.
Palmieri includes poetry from a variety of writers including Erasmus, Saint Patrick and Reinhold Niebuhr author of the “Serenity Prayer.” In fact, Palmieri offers his own version of the prayer: “God grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change directly/The courage to change the person I can/The wisdom to know that person is me/And to leave the changes of others to God and them (72).”
The author covers many components of relationships including emotional and physical intimacy, the impact of substance abuse, and the need to have a connection with a Higher Power. He also challenges the traditional perspective of what relationships should be and how individuals should exist in them: “Treat the other person in the relationship the way they want to be treated and not the way you want to be treated (11).”
While Palmieri offers many nuggets of wisdom and guides the reader towards introspection, some parts of the book could have been stronger. There are several poems and quotes included that are attributed to an anonymous source or not at all. Also, the addition of an explanatory paragraph at the beginning of each of the lists of affirmations and instructions for completing the exercises would make this book more useful to readers just as the directive to read the “I am okay” list of affirmations daily was highly effective.
In a world where troubled relationships are the norm, Relationship Recovery provides insight and jars accepted viewpoints.
