TO Drink Or Not To Drink--- The Common Sense Of Drinking is an Ideal book to give to someone who maybe questioning whether or not he or she has a drinking problem. ”The Common Sense Of Drinking” is a great recovery book for the newcomer in Alcoholics Anonymous. Many people find that a newcomer is more inclined to accept and read “To Drink Or Not To Drink” rather than be given the AA big book immediately. Several Old timers in the program have found the book helpful in further cementing the idea that they have an incurable disease. It is also helpful as an aid in the completion of step one Of any 12 step program. A must read for anyone who is stuck on Step one of the program as it is a direct common sense approach that meets the question of powerlessness in step one head on.

A powerful recovery book, that was virtually out of reach to the average reader as the lowest cost copy was in the thousands of dollars. Now it is available in an inexpensive paperback for all to read. It saved lives before, may it save lives again
sincerely

TO Drink Or Not To Drink--- The Common Sense Of Drinking

Is an Ideal book to give to someone who maybe questioning whether or not he or she has a drinking problem.

Written by Richard Peabody in the early 1930s, “The Common Sense of Drinking” describes alcoholism and the behavior of many alcoholics. Divided into four sections, the book carefully details the condition of alcoholism, along with the diagnosis of the disease, first steps towards successful treatment, and “the cure made effective.” Republished in 2009 by Tuchy Palmieri as “To Drink or Not To Drink: The Common Sense of Drinking,” this book, although somewhat dated in parts, still serves as a wonderful resource for anyone interested in studying the early research on the condition of alcoholism.  The book has been republished by Healing-Habits and made available to the everyday reader

Excerpt

The surrender to the fact that alcohol can no longer be indulged in without bringing disastrous results is of such importance that it requires extremely thoughtful consideration. This surrender is an absolute starting point as far as the conscious mind is concerned

A book That saved My life
a book that saved my life, February 20, 2008
By Bob D.

Forty two years ago - in Feb. 1966 - after almost twenty years of increasingly alcoholic drinking, I randomly pulled a copy of "The Common Sense of Drinking" from a bookshelf in the library of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. Written by Richard Peabody in the early 1930s, the book described alcoholism and the behavior of many alcoholics. As I turned the pages, an awareness dawned on me: this book is about me. I took the book home and read it cover to cover. I have not had a drink since then, nor have I desired one. Peabody's book was not a miracle for me in itself - I joined AA shortly thereafter and give almost all the credit for my continued sobriety to AA, its ideas and its people. But "The Common Sense of Drinking" was a serendipitous doorway for me. It provided the safecracker's "click" that I apparently had been listening for during many previous, fruitless attempts to figure out what was wrong with me. I commend this book to anyone interested in early research on alcoholism. I would dearly love to find a copy (it's long out of print) or locate a descendant of Richard Peabody to express my belated thanks.

Why do some drinkers become Alcoholics?,
Why do some drinkers become Alcoholics?, March 15, 2010

review is from: To Drink or Not to Drink: The Common Sense of Drinking (Paperback)
Alcohol has been a problem for portions of human society for the length of recorded history. This book was written based on observations made many years ago but much of what is in this book is as true today as it was back in the 1930's when it was originally penned.

The book starts from a discussion on the effects of home and social environments on the tendency of one to drink and maybe drink excessively. From there it goes on to talk about how one might recognize the problem and develop a desire to change and finishes with steps to solidify the desire to change and make the change stick. The book describes the type of people that are most likely to change and tries to help them make that change. This research is based on both scientific and case study data and has some good foundations.

To Drink or Not to Drink - The Common Sense of Drinking by Touchy Palmieri is a republication of The Common Sense of Drinking by Richard Peabody. It provides good information for people trying to understand why they are alcoholics and what can be done to stop. It also can be helpful to the people in the alcoholic's life that want to know how to be supportive during the process.

Alcoholism Explained
To Drink or Not to Drink: The Common Sense of Drinking (Paperback)
This book really delves into the root causes of alcoholism and removes the doubt or denial that a person suffering from it can have. It really is a common sense approach that Tuchy applies in what I call, the alcoholics handbook. He examines how home, work, social activity all can contribute to over indulgence in drinking. He looks at how over indulgence does not always turn into alcoholism, but that alcoholism is always overindulgence. The question of why we are over-drinking is closely looked at, but the approach to how to overcome it, is what makes this book a must have for anyone with this problem. It is also a great book for anyone with a family member or close friend who is suffering from the disease of alcoholism.

Reviews for "To Drink Or Not To Drink"

Reviewed by Georg Mateos 9/16/2009
Drinking and Driving is one of the most common ways to fatalities.
A couple glass of wine with your dinner is OK, a couple of bottles aren't.
A cold beer on the back porch on a hot summer afternoon is refreshing, but drinking cold beers until passing out isn't cool anymore.
Man should be capable to stop drinking, smoking, eating and in general being a jerk blaming others or fate for his own inability.
But, if the book can make just one man to stop drinking or at least calling a cab instead of driving under the influence...kudos to it!
