He watched as another black shape flitted from tree to tree, outlined by only the light from the night stars. The city was long dark and the residents lay in various stages of slumber, awaiting the dawn to trudge onward to their daily tasks. Not so with Temiker, for he was accustomed to the nighttime hours. In fact, it was during the lonely stillness of the night that Temiker’s bursts of inspiration arose out of the silence. If it were not for his students at the magic school he founded, Temiker would sleep the day through and arise at dusk as the night owl he felt himself to be. The wizard ran his hand over his bald scalp and tried to make sense out of the stealthy movements occurring outside. The men surrounding his home appeared to know what they were doing, and what they were about was making sure that there was no way for him to escape. It was doubtful then that they intended to kill him, he thought as he fiddled with his beard. No, more likely they intended to capture him, but for what purpose? There was no wife to pay a ransom. In fact, he could think of no one in the city who would care if he disappeared, save his students. Temiker was a solitary individual, who while sociable, never went out of his way to make friends. He never bothered anybody and did not take kindly to others bothering him. His love was magic and what he wanted most out of life was to master it. His skill in the magical arts was well known and he was regarded as one of the best wizards in all of Omunga. Another black shape slid across his view through a different window and Temiker knew his time was short. Moving swiftly and quietly through the dark room, as only its occupant could, Temiker grabbed the essentials he would need for an extended stay away from the home he had known for most of his life. In a few short moments, he gathered everything he would need and turned once again to the who and why of the attack. None of it made any sense to him. He could not recall anyone that he had offended since the fiasco at the Imperial Palace and that was years ago, certainly not what this attack was about. His concern drifted from himself to his students. He thought quickly about how they would all file into the schoolrooms in the morning and wondered if they would be in danger. Another task before he left then, he decided. Turning towards his extensive library of magic books, Temiker raised his hands and began a complicated spell designed to protect his valuables in his absence. He could not bear to think of the destruction of his collection regardless of what else was looted or destroyed. Through his concentration, he heard the first sounds emanating from the invaders and his pulse quickened when he realized that he may have waited a bit too long. Finishing the protection spell, he whirled to see the face of an invader peering through the window, searching the darkness for the old man. He froze in the shadows and the man's head continued to swivel in its search.

Following a brutal and horrifying attack upon The Omunga Academy of Magic young Lyra is one of the few survivors. Still smarting from the reprimand they have received by Lyra's mother Rhodella Lyra, Syman and Antello the young trio hear the sounds of the attack taking place inside the fortress. The three youngsters hide in the now dry moat until the sounds of carnage are stilled. Only the dead and dying are left inside the stronghold when the trio creep inside. Master Malafar has been taken by the unknown brutes, Rhodella lies dying.

With her mother's enigmatic dying words ringing in her ears Lyra and her two young companions set out for her uncle's home. Why she must go to Temiker is something Lyra does not understand, however her mother's directive propels her forward. Lyra has learned magic from her father, however Malafar has long held a repugnance for magic as a weapon. Lyra is astonished to learn from another survivor that during the attack her mother Rhodella was herself proved a Master Mage and fought with skill and vengeance to protect the students and her family.

What other secrets she may uncover regarding her parents Lyra cannot imagine as she sets out on a dangerous cross-country trek for the home of her uncle. The attackers have planned well, appear to forecast her every move and before long even the government has joined the quest for Lyra. She is forced to enter the fearful land of the Sakova filled with rapacious animals, inexplicable divination and even cannibals. Sakova is a region that does not look kindly upon interlopers, however it is the only avenue available to Lyra as she puzzles why anyone would kill so many people in order to abduct her father. The answer to that question as well as the secrets of her own heritage is one that will cause Lyra even more anguish as she struggles to unravel the enigma.

Come observe an extraordinary land springing from the fertile mind of Writer Tuttle on the pages of The Star of Sakova. It is a land where we find a barbarous people who continue to try to finish the abrogation of a populace begun long ago, magic spells, governmental machination and a particularly dastardly form of disingenuousness. The Star of Sakova is an exciting work continuing the saga begun in Tuttle's Young Lord of Khadora. Evocative of Linda Suzanne's hard hitting tumult found among the Insu-ha people of her Eyes of Truth, The Star of Sakova is a fast paced action packed work occupied with a rich tapestry of spectacle, timbre, conflict and duplicity. Writer Tuttle continues his excellent work begun in Young Lord of Khadora with this second in the series.

The Star of Sakova is a well crafted tale filled with nicely fleshed out characters along with excellent plots and plenty of accomplishment meant to capture the interest of the reader from the outset. The sounds of the carnage taking place just beyond the sight of the three young people is made more compelling because writer Tuttle does not over do the barrage. He gives just enough description to allow the reader to 'see' the attack before the results of the encounter are presented. It is a compelling technique used to perfection for drawing the reader right into the opening paragraphs of the work. The action never stops as the reader is carried along on a wild journey filled with everything we have come to expect from excellent writers of fantasy sci-fi. Tuttle is a fine young writer to be reckoned with in the genre. The plot, cabal and just plain good writing fulfills the plan of the writer and leaves the reader hungry for more.

The Star of Sakova will be followed by Web of Deceit. I look forward to receiving the next in the series for review. Raiders attack The Omunga Academy of Magic, killing guards, students and instructors, and kidnap the owner, mage master Malafar. His young daughter, Lyra, and two friends, Syman and Antello, hide beneath the moat's drawbridge and escape being captured or murdered. After the attack, Lyra finds her dying mother, Rhodella, who tells her to go to Temiker, Malafar's brother and Master of a magic academy in Alamar. Once at her uncle's, she is to seek RavenWing. Not knowing RavenWing, but to honor her mother's request, Lyra and her two companions begin the long and dangerous journey to Alamar. The trip is made more dangerous once they learn Lyra is blamed for the deaths and destruction at the academy.

To avoid the Imperial Guard and unknown assassins, the three youths trek through forbidden Sakova -- a jungle supposedly filled with evil spirits and cannibalistic Sakova people . . . a jungle where those who enter are never seen again. But facing Sakovans on ten-foot wingless, meat-eating warbirds (chokas) is not as thwarting as finding out that she, Lyra, is the prophesied leader (Star) of Sakova.

Alazar, First Minister of Omunga, conspires to use Lyra's father, Malafar, to assassinate the Omunga ruler, and then take his place as the "Katana". Once in that position, Alazar plans on extinguishing the Sakovans and conquering and ruling Lord Marak's growing empire in Khadora. But Alazar is not aware of Lyra's unheard of mage powers or her growing love for Sakova and its people. The shrewd minister does not realize the risks he takes by framing Sakovans for Omunga murders and devastation, or by confronting the much-loved Star of Sakova.

Richard S. Tuttle is to be doubly congratulated for Book Two of the Forgotten Legacy series. Star of Sakova is masterfully engineered, correlating his heroine's country's history to that of his hero's in Book One. The many characters are well fleshed and conflicts are abundant and aptly resolved to great satisfaction. I very highly recommend Star of Sakova: Book Two of Forgotten Legacy as a must read, especially as the follow-up to Book One of the fantasy series. Readers will not be disappointed!
