Cuff, a young teenaged slave, is sent by his owners to join the First Rhode Island Regiment; a regiment comprised of slaves and a handful of free African Americans, during the Revolutionary War. Cuff learns that he has the possibility of becoming a free man himself, and builds his dream of owning his own farm, amidst the terrors of war.
Cuff Barker, a young slave on Aquidneck Island, which would later become the Island of Rhode Island, encounters the hazards of war during his journey with Major Ward and the First Rhode Island regiment. He also meets his first friends beside the family that was sold from under him. He meets free Black men, the famous General Lafayette, and learns that some things, such as freedom are worth the price we sometimes must pay with our lives and our courage.

When he opened his tired eyes, he found Mrs. Barker staring at him, her fretful child in her arms...'Cuff, listen to me. You're to do exactly as I say.' 'Yes, ma'am.'Cuff sat up and rubbed the sleep from his eyes. 'Tonight you will run away from here; you'll join up with General Washington's Continental Army...'For a moment, Cuff stayed where he was, clutching Mrs. Barker's letter in his hand. You are always to do what I, or Mrs. Barker, ask of you without question, he remembered Mr. Barker saying that afternoon. But go all the way to Portsmouth, by himself, in the dark... He had no idea what would become of him, but that was no reason to turn back...
