Spotting the Dreamer
Many adult people in the world are busy going through life without an aim, vision or purpose. They do not know who they are or what they want to become. Neither do they know what gainful activities they want to engage in as a life-time career or hobby or as a means by which to contribute to life. Our children therefore suffer the spin-off from that sad fact by not experiencing any form of coaching in building and working towards their dreams.
A child who is without a vision is one who will spread his thoughts and energy wide. This results in a life that does not bring about the experience of a sense of completeness and achievement, unlimited joy, full-satisfaction and full self-expression. For a child to become a successful individual they must have a vision. Barack Obama had an audacious vision of becoming the first African-American president, which he tailored his thoughts, energy and actions towards until it became a reality on November 4, 2008.
To have a vision is to begin with the end in mind. It begins with visual images, pictures or a paradigm of what one wants to achieve. For a vision to come to fruition, a child needs to know who they are to establish their purpose.
To determine who they are, the child will need the coaching and patience of their parents or guardians who themselves have discovered and lived purposefully, have dreamed and still dream, have achieved and still achieve and perhaps most importantly, believe in the power of purpose, dreams and the potential to achieve.
Such a presence in a child’s life can assist the child to determine what they want, where they want to go, why they want it and how they intend to get the object of their desire.
It may seem that I advocate that parents and guardians who are by societal standards non-achievers are not in a position to support children in the development of their sense of self, in discovering their purpose and carving out their own dream. Not at all! Children are naturally happy, energetic dreamers and planners! Have you ever listened to the imaginings of a two or three year-old? These little minds, as we tend to think of them are a power-house of ideas and creativity! Have you ever watched them create and act out a play? They sometimes blow me away with the limitlessness of their thinking and the passion and seriousness with which they play! Children are the epitome of the saying, play like you are working, work like you are playing.
My sentiment here is that at a very early age our children show signs of the ability to dream. Any adult can recognize this. Sometimes that is all it takes, a little recognition, of something great-in-the-making, for the great-in-the-making to start unfolding!
Barack Obama’s success can be significantly attributed to the support he received from his grandparents Madelyn and Stanley Dunham. In 1977 they had full guardianship of Barack while his mother Ann Dunham and half-sister Maya Soetoro-Ng remained in Jakarta Indonesia. Throughout the years, his grandmother nurtured his dreams, protected him from discrimination and racism and ensured that she gave him the best opportunities to develop his dream. One sacrifice she made was to forfeit some of her needs to enrol him in the prestigious school Punahao Academy
where he graduated with honours in 1979.
