Wheat grass is an amazing ‘sunfood’, containing chlorophyll and a host of vitamins, minerals and enzymes. Li describes the plant’s historical and spiritual roots as well its physical attributes with sections on herbs, edible flowers, juices & cleansing!

Written by South African wheatgrass authority Li Smith and illustrated by award-winning artist and cartoonist Richard Smith, Li’s husband, this book offers a wonderful introduction to wheatgrass, fresh vegetable juices, herbs, edible flowers and many other health and rejuvenation insights. Richard’s illustrations enhance the text, offering a reader-friendly format for the book.In addition, Wheatgrass: Superfood presents an intriguing historical and spiritual perspective for this nutrient-dense food. From the ancient hearth fires in the Kromdraai savannahs to the ‘Mysteries’ of the fertile valleys of Isis along the Nile to the sanctuary of Asclepios in ancient Greece, Li weaves her tale, elaborating upon the therapeutic reverence with which wheat has been esteemed since its domestication. Finally, this book offers a vision of health and healing to both the individual and to society at large. With wheatgrass, organic agriculture, and holistic therapy as its cornerstones, Li presents her vision of the ideal healing institution, at once utopian and practical, as the foundation for developing an actual health and healing center.

Excerpt

Chlorophyll constitutes 70% of the soulte in wheatgrass and has been extensively tested for its extraordinary healing powers. This green 'life blood' of the plant draws its energy from the light of the sun and has the ability to infuse our bloodstream with healing and regeneration. Light particles transfer energy during the process of photosynthesis. Sun-rays filter through the tissues of the plant and release their photons which are gradually absorbed and stored within the atoms of the plant.

Drinking freshly expressed wheatgrass juice may be our link to this primary energy source - an infusion of sun-energy may be the reason for the light "sparkling" snesation so often reported by many individuals using wheatgrass.

Author Li Smith has been growing wheatgrass for over 20 years in South Africa. Wheatgrass:Superfood for a New Millennium is a wonderful book of insights, experience, and wisdom from the kingdom of chlorophyll. The nutritive and therapeutic blessings of wheatgrass juice as well as the histories and spiritual traditions of this superfood are as old as life itself. Fermented foods, herbs, and edible flowers are also graciously touched apon. Cleansing, rejuvenation, and life are all gifts Mother Earth gives you when you drink of her nectar. So have a little liquid sunshine and feel the peace.

Book Reader
WHEATGRASS by Li Smith (paper. $10.95) is subtitled Superfood for a New Millennium. Wheatgrass juice can work wonders. South African Li Smith, raised on a farm, talks about the tremendous health benefits from wheatgrass juice, how to grow wheatgrass (I have developed a growing technique which is simple and effective), wheat history, the essentials of growing young. A youthful skin, shining white teeth, boundless energy and a trim body belong to everyone. A small book brimming with essential information that takes us through the health-giving properties of plants to recipes using fresh products to all sorts of fascinating wheatgrass concoctions; tinctures, oils, even vinegars. Very useful for a host of healings from kidney ailments to high blood pressure to asthma attacks. Slumber Juice with carrots, lettuce, lemon balm leaves. Soy cream cheese. And a priceless 21-day wheatgrass rejuvenation plan. Smith has the uncanny ability to cut right to the basic nature of good health, applying considerable knowledge and sympathy. The results are very happy. Just one glass of wheatgrass juice works wonders!
