Bringing back two engaging characters, Nathaniel and Shawn, that we were introduced to in “Sweet Revenge” we have a friendship bond that is everlasting. In “Autumn Run,” a love triangle quickly develops between the pretty daughter of a large plantation and Spanish castle owner, Genevieve, and interestingly enough, her childhood friend, Thornhart; an orphaned gypsy that Genevieve’s father has taken in as a child and raised as his son .. and surprisingly, her priest, Father Castillo. Genevieve has a love/hate relationship with Thornhart and a stressed battle with her feelings for Father Castillo, who fights his yearnings for Genevieve with lots of prayers to maintain his commitment to his church and God. Although the love scenes are dramatic and tense, they do run on a bit long becoming unnecessary, but by the end, you will rooting for your own proper choice. Father Castillo is concerned for the members of his congregation who has just suffered through a horrible hurricane that caused major destruction to the fruits and vegetable crops for the next harvest, but also nursing two survivors from a tragic shipwreck, Nathaniel being one and his right-hand-man, Jason. The crew was lost at sea and the captain, Nathaniel, has lost his memory.
Might I just add that the names and personalities of the wonderful horse everyone owned was priceless!
There are places where the continuity of sentences and thoughts are disrupted along with some editing issues that decrease the reader’s easy-going reading flow making it hard to follow. Jennifer Miler can create captivating storylines that intrigue the reader making it hard to put the book down. I read this one in one sitting looking for a tantalizing ending but was not impressed. I would have preferred a more detailed and clear closure. I feel it fell a little flat for such an alluring plot.
