My father never smiled at me or said a kind word to me during the entire time I knew him. I was his sixth son and his eleventh child, and by the time I came along in the mid-'Twenties he was spending long, difficult hours in the fields and attending to a number of other responsibilities. In addition to his endless farming chores, he was filling in for the Baptist preacher at the local school on Sunday mornings, making fiddles for his older children and furniture for the family, and inventing thilngs in his blacksmith shop.
