Can a teacher straight out of college tame a class called "The Wild Bunch?"

“So you’re going to try your hand with the Wild Bunch, huh?” That’s the greeting teacher Thomas Payne receives on the first day he reports to work at the Adams School; an old, inner-city structure in Boston. The twenty-four year-old African American male is about to inherit a fifth-grade class so troublesome, his predecessor took early retirement rather than face them.

But the former football player has arrived armed with a fierce determination to succeed—and some novel ideas about using ceremonies to build a cohesive classroom community. But taking on the Wild Bunch is only one of Thomas’s concerns. He also faces disturbing complications in his personal life: the abrupt end of his marriage engagement, his attraction to a fellow teacher, an older brother in prison and a new best friend with a troubling secret.

For the next ten months, Thomas confronts challenges to his faith in the American public school system, his belief in love and his confidence in himself. One thing is certain: at the end of his first year as a teacher, he will never be the same. This intriguing story of a young man’s first step into his profession is filled with surprise, tragedy and hope.

Kelvin L. Reed has woven a fascinating tale of personal struggle and professional commitment, demonstrating that learning and growing is a lifelong process for both children and adults.

Excerpt

Thomas inhaled deeply from the warm, muggy air. For most of his students, next year would bring more or less the same as the current one. The desks and chairs would be bigger, but they still would not have enough textbooks, computers, library books, etc. Thomas didn’t know how to explain why some of God’s children with white skin had so much more than those with brown.

Professional Reviews

From one of our own
“This story of a ‘rookie’ teacher's first year made me laugh, made me cry, and at times, even made me angry. By the time I finished it, I felt I knew each character personally, and I hated to see the end of the year.”

-Carol Pacheco, Elementary Field Representative

Boston Teachers Union

A Great Read (Or should that be Reed?)!!!
"What a pleasure to read a book so fresh and different. Kelvin Reed has produced a work that flows well from beginning to end. The characters are realistic and believable, the story lines makes sense, and the emotional ups and downs of the story all read as true to life. Great job, Mr. Reed!! A great read!"

-Nelson Armstrong, Hanover, New Hampshire

A triumphant year in the trenches of the Boston School System
"Kelvin L. Reed draws on personal experience and a unique vision to craft a tale of hope and triumph where none has come to be expected."

-J. Vincible, INsight Magazine
