The clock struck twelve. I stood at the mirror, dimly lit by the full moon streaming through the window. I leaned in, searching my reflection. After about thirty seconds of sameness, I exhaled. It was finally here. I was forty.
I lumbered back to bed-I was now of legal lumbering age. I groaned. My husband, just a few months into his fortieth year, slept soundly. He was oblivious to my anxiety. Did he not realize that I was old-literally twice the age I had been when we met? No, he was clueless.
I lay on my back, thinking about all the things I was now too old to do, wear, be. I guess a tattoo was out, I thought.
