The nor’easter ended as quickly as it had arrived, lashing out mercilessly at the exposed barrier islands with a night of slashing rain and howling winds. By dawn, however, the storm had moved inland, across the Sound, leaving in its wake ice-covered puddles and a strong, biting wind blowing in from the restless,slate-gray Atlantic.
Before dawn, fishing boats began to ease through the leeward soundside
bay, protected from the winds by the sandy ridges between it and oceanside.
Low pools of vapor hovered over the marshy lowlands around the bay as the
small fleet headed for the mouth of the inlet at Albemarle Sound for another
day at sea. They did not have time to tarry or waste. Inclement weather and
rough seas had already cost them valuable days of fishing, and now the storm had scattered the schools of fish. Today, the boats would have to waste time finding the schools again, before they could bring in another good catch. As intriguing as the events taking place near Kill Devil Hill, four miles south of the remote, isolated little fishing village of Kitty Hawk were, the harsh reality of life on the Outer Banks loomed over their sense of responsibility. The life of a fisherman was never easy or certain. The sea could often be a harsh and unforgiving,
