Father Darren Sacke stifled a yawn and turned a page. He could hear the rain pounding on the roof, walls and windows of the church. It was raining cats and dogs out there! He didn't mind. He was doing his afternoon in the confessional, which meant he would be catching up on his reading even if the day were sunny and in the mid-seventies. He'd heard three confessions that week, all from little old ladies over the age of seventy. Nothing new. Nothing exciting and nothing that would require any serious absolution. He'd given out fifteen token "Hail Mary's" and eleven token "Our Fathers" in the last month.
He turned the page of his book and sighed. Aristotle was not the most exciting thing he'd ever read, but he'd grabbed the book by mistake on his way to hear today's confessions. He pushed his wire-rimmed glasses up the bridge of his nose and sighed. The light in the confessional was dim, under the best of conditions. There was no more light coming from the other side of the confessional booth. But it was quiet. All of the other priests were tending to their own duties and he was alone.
He heard the heavy doors to the church open and let in the screaming rain from outside. He sat up straight. Surely someone was simply trying to escape the deluge outside. He heard the tap of heels on the marble floor on their way in his direction. He knew the light to his confessional was on, beckoning to anyone who wished to unburden themselves.
Sure enough the door on the other side of his confessional opened and closed. He heard a throat clear. A woman, his experience told him. Not old, but not a young girl either.
The sliding panel separating him from the woman slid open. Father Sacke folded the page in his book over and closed it, placing it at his feet.
"Forgive me Father for I have sinned." The voice was low, but unmistakably feminine. "It has been seven years since my last confession."
Father Sacke raised his eyebrows. Seven years! He might hear something interesting for a change. "Tell me of your sins, my child." he said, breathless to hear something even slightly more exciting than the ungracious thoughts of a 85-year-old woman.
