Matt and Heather Townsend, orphaned when their bioscientist parents are killed in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, become wards of their Great-aunt Estelle. Her stately old house in the Marina District holds intrigue, and a secret. Fortunately, Matt discoveres the secret on his thirteenth birthday, and not too soon - he was about to go stark raving mad with boredom.
Years earlier and unbeknown to anyone, rumors of Jon and Josie Townsend's secret research had enticed SafGen's head of security to break into the head office in an attempt to steal the research papers. His goal was to sell the papers, confident that certain foriegn regimes would pay handsomely for the exciting new discovery. Coming up enpty-handed, he devises another plan to get his hands on the papers.
Roger Hill, the subservient butler, fools everyone but Matt and Heather. Their only chance at protecting their aunt and governess, as well as themselves, is to use the house's secret.
Matt Townsend was a handsome nineeen-year-old. His intelligent expression, along with the experiences of the past seven years, gave him an air of sophistication of a man twice his age. He stood in the large library, his green eyes focusing intently on the painting, their gaze softned by the smile on his face.
Matt unconsciously ran a hand through his light brown hair as the room brought back a rush of memories and mixed emotions for him. The icy stare of the old mariner in the portrait no longer seemed as mysterious as it had the first time he saw the painting. "No, I know your secrets now, ol' Captain," Matt said; and his thoughts drifted to 1997, when he was twelve, and of all the things he and Heather had experienced in the old San Francisco house.
