Roxane Brissett is a successful psychotherapist with her own practice in the heart of Manhattan...with her own set of problems, like the clients she counsels through therapy sessions. An insider's view of domestic abuse is set forth in "A Woman Scorn'd," by Philadelphia novelist Dorothy Goins.
Centering around Manhattan psychotherapist, Dr. Roxane Brissett, the book explores the struggles of her patients and herself as they seek to cope with, recover from and prevail over the emotional scars caused by violence and molestation.
The book is set among handsome, young professionals on the fast track. It weaves tales of stock market fraud, murder and fantastic sex around the narrative about abuse and healing. The book explores the tie between warm supportive families and children who rise far above the modest circumstances of their birth.
The book teaches that only after a victim is able to gush out suppressed pain, can she succeed at love and master life's challenges. Goins shows that faith should not be discounted as a path to healing.

In Dorothy Goins' A WOMAN SCORN'D, readers gain insight in the turmoil surrounding the life of psychotherapist Roxane Brissett. Still suffering from a tragic event from her childhood and the death of her mother, Roxane channels all her energy into "All About Me," where she counsels women subjected to abuse or domestic violence. After her mother's death her aunt Nadine, who she doesn't get along with, raised Roxane and her brother Kenny. Even now she wonders why Nadine always showered Kenny with affection, but never her. Roxane is also very protective of Kenny, who she can always depend on since
she rarely gets to see her workaholic investment broker boyfriend Maurice Walker.
Roxane is not your typical psychotherapist; she also makes house calls. While leaving court with one of her clients, Roxane meets attorney Blade Tyson. She is so in awe of his presence that she has to get a reign on her runaway hormones. Little does she know the feeling is mutual because Blade is checking her out as well. When several events occur, the death of one of her clients; finding out that Maurice is not the man she fell in love with; to discovering why she and Nadine don't get along, Roxane realizes that while helping others she has failed to help herself.
Ms. Goins has penned a very heartfelt and inspiring story of finding oneself. Roxane was determined to help others while dealing with the wrenching turmoil surrounding her childhood as well as the pressures of her everyday life. The novel was well-written with a wonderful storyline. Some of the characters are of Creole descent and their language is found throughout the book; however, it was easy to understand because the author provides a translation for each word. This is the first novel that I have read by Dorothy Goins, and I'm looking forward to reading many more.

A Woman's Strength
Roxanne Brisset is the epitome of strength as far as her younger brother Kenneth is concerned. Roxanne is a psychotherapist and the strongest kindest person he knows. Kenneth, ten years her junior, has no memory of their mother. The only relationship with their father has been talking to him from jail. Roxanne is holding onto a family secret that she wants to share with Kenneth. She just has no way of telling him. Always extending herself, she does everything she can for him and her clients. Going beyond the call of duty, she even does house calls. When everything comes crashing in on her, will she continue to have strength through it all or will she crumble?
I really enjoyed this story. The author shows us how to turn a bad situation into something that works for us all. She explains the effects child abuse can have on us as adults and how when you finally forgive you can live again. I recommend this story. Ms. Goins' A Woman Scorn'd is a job well done.
