Being around the Rutherford brothers tended to be a mine field, she noticed, and she successfully located every booby trap.
Savannah saw his other arm swing from behind and nearly flinched. She relaxed when she felt him plop a Stetson on top of her head, “There ya go. I picked a darker one – goes with your hair.”
Certain she looked as ridiculous as she felt with the cowboy hat tilted harshly to one side, she merely smiled and thanked him. Then she pointed to the saddle, “Is that meant for me?”
He hoisted it about waist level and considered her statement, “Well, it’s a bit big for you, plus, if Ennis caught me trying to strap this on you, he’d probably kill me.” He waited a moment for the words to soak in then nudged her with his elbow, “I’ve got your horse ready outside, just needs this. You run along and change – dress warm now – and I’ll wait for you right here.”
She removed the hat, “I’d rather wait for Ennis to join us.”
A crafty grin spread on Dane’s rugged features, “Now a sweet little Georgia girl like you wouldn’t be scared of a big ol’ Texas boy like me, would you?” He shrugged, “I mean, you being a police officer and all. But if you feel more secure with my brother hanging on you, we’ll wait.”
It was a challenge and she knew it. He also baited her which she realized too. Her head tilted slightly and she returned his grin with one of her own, “It’ll just take a minute. Wait there,” she pointed to a nearby wicker rocker, “and I’ll be back.”
