Author Anita Wills chronicle of Virginia's own Creole Population. The story is a chronicle of the extraordinary lives of a group labled, Free Persons of Color.
In this book Ms. Wills chronicles the extraordinary achievements of her maternal ancestors. The chronicles include the life of Mary Bowden (born 1730), who was the Granddaughter of William Monroe, President James Monroes' Grandfather. As a Mulatto, born in Westmoreland County Virginia, she was sentenced to an indenture of thirty years.
The person receiving her indenture, was the father of George Washington, Augustine Washington Senior. Mary would serve almost forty years, because of her frequent attempts to run away.
Another chronicle is of the Lewis brothers, Charles and Ambrose, who were also Mulattoes. They were the sons of a white man, John Lewis, and a Mulatto woman. Charles and Ambrose began serving Indentures, which were cut short by the Revolutionary War. The brothers signed on to the war in Fredericksburg Virginia, as Seamen, and then as Soldiers.
The stories of Colonial Virginia's Free Persons of Color, are dramatic and true.

"Charles and Ambrose Lewis, were Free Blacks, who served in the Revolutionary War out of Fredericksburg Virginia. They were born in King George County, and were serving indentures prior to joining the Revolutionary War. They served first as Seamen, and then as Foot Soldiers at The Battle of Camden South Carolina. Ambrose was shot nine times, and bayonnetted clean through, at that deadly battle. Many of the American Soldiers lost their lives, or fled from the British.
The next battle for Cornwallis, the British General, was The Siege of Yorktown, and he was soundly defeated. A significant number of soldiers at, The Siege of Yorktown, were Persons of Color. They included Natives and Free blacks, including Rawley Pinn, his brother Robert, and Nephews' Billy, Jim, and John. In his pension file, John Pinn is referred to as, "Indian", and he states that his mother was Cherokee, and his father Mestezo (Mustee). "
