Europe - the Second World War was a war that involved everyone, not just a few generals and politicians, but every member of every family. Devon, England - Vera & Eddy meet and get married but are soon overtaken by extraordinary events of war. From almost comical preparations to repel an invasion and grim reality of enemy air attacks, to the almost surreal spectacle of D-Day and the fighting that followed; Vera & Eddy lived through it and dealt with it in their individual ways. For Eddy, the breakout from Normandy and the advance through Belgium and Holland to the German border was a time that brought him to the brink of destruction - in ways that the word, "destruction", is inadequate to define. September 3rd 1939 was a Sunday. Vera and Eddy went two doors along for Sunday lunch at her mother and father's. They all knew that war was about to be declared. They waited by the radio. At eleven Chamberlain said,
"We are now at war with Germany..."
Ned was a great supporter of the Royal Navy, the Senior Service. In the Great War he had volunteered for the Navy, only to be turned down because of his fatty heart.
"No-one'll get past the Royal Navy." he said. Later that day they heard that the SS Athenia had been sunk.
