By the time The Beatles arrived, the teenage girls had whipped themselves into a frenzy, causing so much pandemonium the “Daily Mirror’s” next day headline screamed, “Beatlemania,” a word forever used to describe the phenomenon created by any appearance of The Beatles.
After the performance, a receiving line formed for the artists to meet the Royal family (or vice versa). These receiving lines have long been a subject of derision amongst performers who at one time or another have been subject to the trite small talk offered by the Royals. As John Lennon approached the Queen Mother, she asked, “Where are you appearing next?”
John replied, “Slough.”
Her Majesty remarked, “Oh that’s near us.”
