A ferocious wind from the east whipped a driving rain against my window. With eyes still closed, I grasped my pillow and wrapped it around my head. But even through the pillow’s thickness, I could hear torrents of rain hitting the window – an irregular drumbeat -- and the rumble of heavy thunder. Lightening flashed, illuminating the room, and its flickering reflection crept around my soft protective barrier. I always hated thunderstorms.
As I cowered beneath my pillow, I thought about my dog, Roger. Did I let him in last night? Poor thing. I often forgot about him. It’s a wonder he didn’t bite me in the ass for all the times I left him outside. Roger is a very large German Shepard with a dark brown coat and huge paws. He has the gentlest black eyes that appear to understand when I whine to him about how the world isn’t treating me right. Those eyes reminded me of my nephew, who is but a year younger than me. Roger – nephew Roger, that is -- always responded the same way when I cried my heart out to him. So, I named my dog after him. But in spite of how wonderful and brave he is, I have to admit that more than once I found Roger – dog Roger -- in a corner of the back porch during a hellish rainstorm, tail tucked tightly between his legs and shivering like a poodle. Then again, that’s why Roger and I got along so well. We were both cowards.
