Back in 1940, a sixty-hour certificate qualified a teacher for the classroom. As soon as she acquired one, Zula Turney accepted a teaching position in a one-room school. Heat came from a wood stove; drinking water came from a spring. For her services, she received $40 a month, with a quarter of that amount allotted for room and board in a family's home. "I shared my bedroom with the grandma who lived with them," Zula often remembered, "and I walked the four miles home every weekend."
