“You didn’t return any of my calls. And I stopped by the Academy. What’s going on?” The museum storage room was dark and stuffy. Sid stood in the doorway. His bright white uniform seemed to glow in the dismal surroundings. He walked in and closed the door. Removing his cap, he placed it on top of a stack of boxes. He raised his palms. “What are you doing here?”
Belinda had been alone. She looked up from a yellow file folder and although her heart thundered, she forced herself to remain calm -- almost complacent. “Working.”
“What happened?” he asked again, getting closer.
“What happen with what?” She looked down at the folder.
“Well, with the Academy, for one.”
Before he could add ‘and us,’ which she knew was coming, she said, “It’s a long story.”
“Another one?” he clipped lightly. She sensed his feeling of betrayal and ignored the sting in his voice. Although she hadn’t seen him since that horrible scene in her kitchen, he’d called and called and left messages -- unlike her father, who still ignored her. It was like a war no one could win. They all took different sides yet fought for the same thing -- a piece of her. Now, they all staggered around like wounded shell-shocked soldiers. They all dealt with it differently. Skipper and Ruthie seemed to imposed themselves to exile, Sid was running around trying to fix it, and she just wanted to lick her wounds and make it all go away -- at least until she could think clearly.
Her head was still cluttered with emotions that interlocked with each other and became impossible to separate. In the end she chose to do nothing, in fear of reacting the wrong way. But she knew this sitting on the fence wouldn’t last for long. And yes, she wanted Sid. But at what cost? She needed her father. Her family. It was all so complicated.

Bonita Slunder is an amazing storyteller. I fell madly in love with her hero, Sid Holmes and I became so drawn into Belinda's plight that I finished the book in three sittings.
Hope there's more to come from this author!
