The Play's the Thing
Forgive me, Lord,
for all the tasks
that went undone today.
But this morning when my child
toddled in and asked, "Mommy play?",
I simply had to say yes.
And between the puzzles and trucks
and blocks and dolls and old hats and
books and giggles,
we shared a thousand special thoughts,
a hundred hopes and dreams and hugs.
And tonight, when prayer time came
and he folded his hands and softly whispered,
"Thank you, God, for Mommy and Daddy and
toys and french fries, but 'specially
for Mommy playing,"
I knew it was a day well wasted.
And I knew you'd understand.

In her third edition of A New Mother's Prayers, Jayne Jaudon Ferrer revisited new motherhood through the eyes of several women she interviewed. They provided the quotes for the beginning of each section, as well as inspired new poems. Ferrer also had the opportunity to change a phrase or word in the original poems.
The inspirational sections are: "Prayers for Moments of Gratification," "Prayers for Moments of Exhaustion," "Prayers for Moments of Fascination," "Prayers for Moments of Trepidation," "Prayers for Moments of Reflection."
Whether the infant was planned or not, the birth is always a blessing. "A Mother's Prayer" addresses the awe of infancy and their angelic qualities. In "Shared Credits," Ferrer discovers all the family traits in the baby and celebrates God's power of creation.
Humor shines through in moments of exhaustion. "Superwoman's Lament" lists the mother's hectic pace and longs for a 30-hour day. There are the moments of being overwhelmed, when mothers cry out, "What Have I Gotten Myself Into?"
Ferrer's poems range from humorous to insightful. There is an everyman quality of the poems that make this a good inspirational gift book. Jayne Jaudon Ferrer is a wife, mother of three sons, writer, and speaker. She and her family live in Greenville, South Carolina.

Presented as small prayers; each verse is as a talk with God to articulate the weariness, delight, marvel, aggravation, and even confusion experienced by those of us who have shared our homes and lives with children of any age.
The mind-set and portrayals communicated through these earnest words are those that mothers, teachers, caretakers, and everyone with an interest in motherhood can attest.
Ferrer presents her notions, ideas and values as the deeply held emotions we begin to experience with the birth or adoption of a child and covers the gamut of delight, bemusement and even times of sorrowfulnesss that motherhood brings.
