Jilly is puzzled. Her dog, Old Butterpaws, has been missing for months. Ever since Jilly first saw him, as an unconscious puppy on her back step, Butterpaws has been strange. When he was at home, there were messes and noises. (Perfectly understandable). Now that he's not there, there are messes and noises too. (Very scary.)
What can be happening? Why did Butterpaws vanish and where is he now? Jilly is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery of the disappearing dog.

I screamed. My heart thudded hard against my ribs. It was a horrible feeling. The nearest thing I can remember was the time I dropped a dollar in the street and turned back to get it. There was a car coming the other way, and the driver had to brake and swerve to avoid me. I got back onto the footpath and my heart started slamming around and I could hardly breathe. I never told Mum, because Mum would have given me the three-minute lecture. I didn't need that. I knew I'd never, never, turn back across the street like that again. Not for a hundred dollars. Not without looking left and right a dozen times first.
So, there I was, standing in the broad daylight staring at the place where a soggy red rubber ball had been. I flopped down on my knees and had a closer look. There was a damp little mark where the ball had been rolling, and apart from that - nothing. And the dampness was already evaporating in the sunlight.
