The Cabin is the story of three individuals, Sue, Ethan, and Anna attempting to survive the Alaskan winter in a log cabin that they built. Sue and Ethan are childhood friends and together they hitchhike across the country, purchase a truck in Oregon, and travel to Fairbanks, Alaska. In Fairbanks, they meet Sue’s companion Anna. Anna is a beautiful, but terribly troubled, woman who has spent the winter gathering supplies and gear to outfit the adventure. The Cabin is inspired by the author’s own experience.

Sue approaches her childhood friend, Ethan, and pleads with him to travel with her to Alaska. Sue, and her companion Anna, want to leave the world behind and begin a life in the wilderness. Sue explains that they began building a cabin in Alaska the year before and need his help to finish the cabin this summer. Ethan reluctantly agrees to go. Sue and Ethan are polar opposites, but complement each other well. Sue is a pacifist, a vegetarian and liberal. Ethan is a Christian and conservative. They have little money but lots of enthusiasm. The adventure becomes imperiled when two drunks pick up Sue and Ethan hitchhiking. The adventure becomes more complicated when Ethan falls in love with a girl in Oregon. Finally arriving in Fairbanks, Ethan finds Anna to be cold and dangerous, but beautiful. The three overcome a host of initial problems and travel deep into the wilderness. They attempt to build a log cabin, and begin to try to live out their lives. The three find themselves plagued by building the cabin, the harsh conditions they live under, and their own interactions. The greatest danger the three face is a secret that Anna has kept hidden from everyone.

The Cabin

THE ENCOUNTER
I took my family on a vacation to Las Vegas. We don’t gamble, but the
allure of what the city offered in cheap rooms and free entertainment
intrigued us. We had beautiful rooms, fantastic food, and every morning I
got up early and traveled to the mountains to hunt mule deer.
The alarm clock went off at four in the morning, as I wanted to get to
Mt. Charleston before sunrise. I put on my camouflage and went downstairs.
The casino offered free drinks, and I grabbed two cups of coffee. I found
a booth, guzzled the first cup, and felt the caffeine seeping into my brain. I
sat in a daze sipping the second cup.
I noticed a pretty woman in a black dress walking through the casino.
She glanced toward me, came forward, and sat across from me.
“Hello,” she said.
“Hi,” I retorted back. She sat, staring at me with piercing eyes.
“You don’t remember me, do you?” she asked.
I looked at her feeling very foolish, but I couldn’t come up with her in
my mind. Perhaps she was mistaken.
“Ethan, who else but you would wear camouflage in a casino?” she
asked.
Ok, so she does know me….
“I’m hunting mule deer.”
“Who else but you would come to Las Vegas to hunt deer? You still
don’t remember me, do you … the cabin … Alaska?” she said grinning.
I looked at the woman in front of me and remembered her having waistlength
hair. Thirty years ago, when I was eighteen, Sue and I hitchhiked
across the country, met this woman, and together we built a cabin in the
wilderness. I breathed out her name, “Anna ….”
