APPLE PIE
Enslaved on this plantation picking and peeling apples for the master sixty-five years, in the kitchen baking just to live. What is that you smell? Well that’s homemade Apple pies. Lay them in the window to cool for a perfect triangle that’s tasty and
smooth…The smell sends an aroma that makes the slaves and hound dogs in the cotton field wild. Singing the song Johnny Apple seed… gives a clue that one of the slaves will be running by noon. The scents of the pies are lip-smacking, mouth-watering, sugary and enticing, making the dogs confused when a slave makes a move…Slaving in that kitchen until the master says you can go. Once I am through with my cooking, I slip a pie to my family. Thou shall not steal, but I say Loooord…, I baked it can’t I taste it…?
With a laugh at myself on the way home of the thought of the Apple pie I stole. Why want you run like the rest? Tooooo… old… to….. Run...
These aged hands has peeled thousands… of apples and baked many pies, if you run those mean dogs will eat you alive thinking you are an Apple pie.
This collection of poetry addresses the nature of time, reflections on the natural world, the difficulty of loss,
contemporary social issues and gratitude for life.
This book represents a thirty-day period of my poetry journal. Each poem addresses
the dominant thoughts occupying my mind during the early morning hours of a given
day.
