The story begins with a suicide attempt by a young woman, Jenna Thomas, at the lowest point of her young life. She has been betrayed by the man that she trusted with her love and now she must depend on her brother Aaron to lift her from the depths of despair and help her rebuild her shattered life.
The setting for this story focuses on Oak Hill Farm in Camden, SC. The family has raised thoroughbred Arabian horses for three generations. The young woman’s brother manages the farm, but travels to Memphis, Tennessee to be at his sister’s side after the suicide attempt. His support is the only hope that she has to cling to at this early stage of recovery.
The southern location is a look back at a former lifestyle that is slipping away. Roosevelt Johnson, the farm foreman, and his son Sam lend regional flavor to the story with the southern dialect of the uneducated Roosevelt, but Sam represents the upward direction that the younger blacks have experienced as education has liberated them to be the best that they can be.
The villain in the novel is a well-educated Mexican that Jenna met in college. She marries him, has a child and is betrayed by him. He takes her fortune and her child and leads her into a life of addiction that eventually leads to the suicide attempt. Marco Rodriquez is ruthless and his treatment of her in his early years is a prelude to his later involvement is criminal activities in his home Mexico.
Part of the story is set in Mexico City and Marco’s hacienda, where he has a young Mexican housekeeper, Lupita, who takes care of Jenna’s child Michael
Aaron and his life long friend John Crain go on a trip to Mexico where they bungle their attempt to recover Michael. They meet a young lady that becomes a love interest for Aaron. She is Susan Jones, an agent for the CIA, who is also investigating the activities of Marco, particularly his drug trafficking into the U. S.
During Jenna’s recovery, prior to the trip to Mexico, John had spent a lot of time at the farm and Jenna has learned of his long time affection for her. He expresses his love for her, but she is reluctant to place her trust in another man for fear of being betrayed again. Finally, she realizes the depth of his love for her and his devotion to her brother Aaron.
This is a touching and intriguing story of betrayal, love renewed, danger and a look at the anger and rage that rules a ruthless criminal’s life. What tragic finale will this story reach? Surely it will culminate in more bloodshed, but through all of this, Aaron untiringly strives to make Jenna’s life all that she could hope it might be. This is truly a story of a brother’s love for a sister in distress.
