Every chapter is a seperate story of Alexander Walker's life. Dealing with demons, spirtis, and more.
This story is told in the first person point of view by the main character, Alexander Walker. Every chapter is another story in Walker’s life. Walker is not like anyone else. He sees things that nobody else can see and experiences things that people only experience in their nightmares. His journey includes dealing with demons and spirits, the possessed and the deceived, the loss of a loved one, and physical, emotional, and spiritual torment. “The things I have seen in the twenty something years of my life, most people never see in a life time. I don’t regret anything, and I wouldn’t want anything to be different. This is my life.”
Excerpt
Insomnia, I hate insomnia. I wish I could just fall asleep. I don’t know why I’m still awake. Many nights I’ll be lying awake in my bed because my mind just won’t shut up. I open my eyes and reach for that television remote. The worst part is, I’m too tired to watch TV. I’m too tired to do anything, but I simply can’t fall asleep. I hate nights like this.
This mostly happens when I have to wake up early for an appointment or something. Normally, the day before, I’ll force myself to wake up early in hope of being tired at an earlier time than normal. Then I’ll try to go to sleep early, which never seems to happen.
I’ll be tossing and turning for an hour or two and then I’ll give up for a while. I’ll try to watch TV, but there’s probably nothing I want to watch. Sometimes I’ll just stare into the darkness, hoping that my eyes would grow heavy and I’d just drift off to lala land. I’ll look at the alarm clock and only have two hours before it goes off. That’s about when I’d fall asleep. Then the sound of the alarm would wake me up, and I’d feel worse than I would have if I just stayed awake.
I want to go to sleep, but I can’t. This is what I love about working at night, but tomorrow, my day is pretty full and I have to wake up early for a doctor’s appointment. I hate doctors. Sometimes I think they schedule me for odd hours just to piss me off.
Tonight, I don’t know if it’s my mind that’s keeping me up, or this heartburn. The heartburn is so bad that it feels like I’m about to throw up. I’ve taken so much antacid that I’m practically foaming at the mouth. That’s what I’m seeing the doctor about tomorrow, or today, whatever you want to call it since it’s now past midnight.
I toss and turn the hours away, and then I give up again. I slide out of bed and head to the bathroom. I slide my shorts down to piss as I try to count the hours I have left before I need to get out of bed. I flush the toilet and stand there, waiting for my cue to jiggle the stupid handle. Like so many things in my life, the toilet’s broke.
I wash my hands and stand there, staring at the mirror. God I’m so tired. I look at the art decorating my arms and trace the scars on my body and chest, and suddenly a quote from my favorite movie comes to mind, “It’s not the age, it’s the mileage.”
I can feel my mind slowing down and my eyes feel heavy, maybe I’ll actually be able to fall asleep now. I don’t even want to look at the clock. I just crawl in my blanket and close my eyes.
It’s dark, I can’t see a thing. Suddenly, a voice off in the distance, I don’t know what it just said, but it sounds familiar. I start running towards the noise. With every step I make, I feel my heart beat throughout my entire body. It feels like I’m moving in slow motion, will I ever get to where I’m going. I stop in mid-step and I wonder, what exactly am I running towards? The darkness explodes into brightness and a crow flies to my feet. Looking up at me, it opens up its beak and the most annoying noise in the world comes out.
I wake up to the buzzing of my alarm clock. I hate that noise, if only I could sleep for a few more hours, or days. I turn off my alarm clock and roll out of my queen size grave. I should have stayed awake; I probably wouldn’t feel so awful if I did.
I brush my teeth and shave, keeping my mustache and beard as normal. Then I put on the usual garbs, a black buttoned up collar shirt with the top two buttons undone, with no tie. Wearing a tie and buttoning the top button of my shirt always gives me the sensation that I’m choking. Black slacks and my black suede boots finish it off. It’s pretty cold this autumn morning, so I grab my long black leather walking coat on my way out.
I hate doctor offices. You show up to a small room full of sick people, the receptionist gives you enough paper work to give you hand cramps and even after you finish telling your life history, you still have to wait half an eternity. Then finally it happens, “Walker?” It’s like winning the lottery, “Alexander Walker?”
