Jamie Marshall is not an ordinary thirteen year-old boy. He still enjoys playing his sandbox with his Digger. One evening while they are playing, they uncover a strange statue of an animal that is part lion with the head of an eagle. The next day, the school bully tries to take it away before he gets a good look at it. The statue came to life telling the bully to leave Jamie alone. When the bully takes a punch at the griffin, the griffin swipes him across the face. That night, Jamie has a nightmare about a man with a car with abnormal wheels. He asks Jamie to heal it. The next morning, the man from the dream appears in Jamie's room, telling him it's time to go on his first official journey with Digger, and the griffin, his new protector. Jamie has many questions he wants answers and longs to talk with the Creator.

It was snowing hard in the city of Ampan. The students trudged to school relucatantly, wondering out loud why they didn't have a snow day because the it was so deep they could barely walk in it. A group of kindegartener passed the group of big sixth graders causing them to laugh because the little kids could barely be seen over the snowdrifts. They were pushing some of them into the drifts.
Jamie followed up behind this group, listening, hating what he heard. His heart for the little kids. He remembered when he could barely manuver in the snow, yet this year it was not as bad. These big kids, all kids he had known from kindegarten, were exaggerating what they did the day before. Jamie felt that exaggerating was as bad as lying. Jamie bowed his head to keep the flying snowflakes from landing on his face as he quickened the pace to pace these boys and girls.
"Look, it's Jamie Weirdo Marshall! Where's your magic machine? Couldn't get it take you to school today so we didn't have to see your ugly face?" one voice rang out. The others joined in the cruel remarks. "Or maybe it's frozen solid right now!"
Jamie's heart grew harder and angrier. . .
Jasper Taradonna braced Jamie, in the present, as they looked back. "Do you want to see more?" Jamie nodded, feeling tears coming to his eyes. It was hard to review this event, but he knew he had to review this event in his life into order to move on.
